Favorite Hip Hop artists? (Old and New)

Hoping to find some good new music and maybe start some good conversations bout hip hop. If your favorite rapper is Weezy..you're still welcome here but keep in mind your opinions suck. (kinda kidding)

And if you're the type that likes to come in and tell me 20 threads been made bout this same thing..go ahead and post them but I'm too lazy to search.

I'd say three of each (favorite older or current rappers and favorite new artists that are coming up..maybe a recommended song or lyric or whatever you wanna post really)

you can count groups as one or multiples..don't care

Favorite rappers-
1. Biggie - of course its close between Biggie and 2pac but I'll only put one up here..Biggie has an insane flow, a great rapping voice, and incredible storytelling ability. Ready to Die is top 5 albums all time in hip hop.. Favorite song from Biggie is Machine Gun Funk although almost all his tracks are quality.

Brother Ali - he's still puttin out good stuff (just dropped Writer's Block, good song..and a nice collab with Classified on Maybe It's Just Me). Big, soulful, smooth flow. All his stuff is nice. Personal favorite - Uncle Sam G'damn.

Jay-Z - has one of the best voices in hip hop..fallen off talent wise lately it seems..Watch The Throne was a quality commercial album with some good songs..but he's lost his realness. Last great album was American Gangster. Can't pick a favorite song..almost everything he makes is great. If you're completely new to Jay-Z somehow..check out No Hook...Big Pimpin

Hon. Mentions (couldn't resist) - Scarface (so consistent..), Bun B, Big L, Method Man, Classified, Atmosphere

New guys-

Action Bronson - great flow, great voice, real rapper talkin bout real things. He's new..but he has skill. true skill. Need more people like him in rap coming up.. Check out Marijuana Bronson, Not Enough Words..Central Booking feat. Meyhem Lauren (Statik Selektah prod.)
think his mixtapes are on DatPiff for free

Meyhem Lauren - this is gonna be a big name. good oldschool NY flow, good lyrics, real gangster stuff..like hip hop is supposed to be. Check out Swiss Alps (feat Action Bronson), Heavy Cream, Just Can't Win

Stalley - a hard rapper..good everywhere but could use better beats..check out Pound and Go On for some good songs

Hon. Mentions - Boaz, OFWGKTADGAF (as a collective), Schoolboy Q, A$ap Rocky

Jurrasic 5, Blackalicious, Wu-Tang Clan, NWA, Andre Nickatina, Immortal Technique, Mac Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, and Jedi Mind Tricks.

Those are some of the artists/groups I used to like, but these days I don’t listen to Hip-Hop or rap.

What do you listen to now?

Haven’t heard of two of those…but I’m a fan of all the others. Good list…bit more hardcore leaning than my current tastes but whenever I’m in a heavy mood Tech, the Clan, and JMT always are in rotation.

Mostly rock or classic rock. I don’t know how to classify all of it. Some of the artists/bands I like these days are Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Boston, ACDC, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the doors, Jimi hendrix, Pink Floyd, Primus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. My interest in music started shifting from rap and hip-hop to rock about three years ago when I started playing electric guitar. Also, if I were to take I guess, I’d say that the two artists you haven’t heard of that I listed are Mac Dre and Andre Nickatina since they are only well known in the SF bay area.

nah andre nickatina and blackalicious.

of course I know Mac Dre! haha

but that’s cool man…I generally listen to multiple genres per day although most rock kinda bores me these days…

but when I switch from a lot of Biggie or Nas or anything pretty gritty then I flip to Elliott Smith (favorite artist of all time, any genre) and honestly…it’s even better. i love seeing the similarities between someone like Biggie and someone like Elliott

now that I think harder though…Andre Nickatina sounds very familiar

Aesop Rock, People Under the Stairs, Wale, P.O.S., Childish Gambino, Kanye, Drake, A Tribe Called Quest, Tyler The Creator

Drake is one rapper that is just…so bad. Lol.

Even though I consider Kanye at best a soft rapper, he’s still better than ladies man aka drake aubrey aka wheelchair jimmy.

aesop rock is dope though!

Good selection, Smorgasbord!

i tried to listen to some childish gambino tracks…and he’s good but ii wasn’t really feelin it.

New Artist: Frank Ocean.

Some songs to check out: Acura Integurl, Swim Good, Songs 4 Women.

Not rap, but more of a RnB/HipHop mix. Very original and definitely amazing.

Here, hit up my website: rapgenius dot com. We’ve got a Mac Miller video interview hitting the site soon, and we’ll be talking with Chiddy Bang, Logic, and a few other up-and-comers you should know about. We’re big on OFWGKTA, too, especially Earl and Frank Ocean.

OLd:
I like Nas and Biggie

New:
Mac Miller and Moufy who’s up and coming

I just like the “Fancy” song.

Thanks, wizkhalifa! BTW, nice lyric analysis on your site.

I’ll check that site out for sure…Chiddy Bang was awesome when he came and did a concert at my uni…but he isn’t doing much these days lol.

See I’m not a huge fan of Frank Ocean’s style of music…but he’s damn good at what he does.

Sundlun, never heard of Moufy…I’ll check him out thanks man.

Since most of the fantastic old rappers have been mentioned, I’ll add a name to the list of great new artists:

Das Racist - Queens based rap group consisting of 2 Indians, a Mexican and an occasional Russian. Their lyrics are so referential and political (mostly to their respective ethnicities, too), it’s lovely. The style of their lyrics and the group itself is very reminiscent of old Queens rap: brute in appearance, in-house record label, smooth flow with oodles of social commentary. IMO, these guys seem to be on the forefront of a new wave of rap: unconventional reinvention of the hip-hop style mostly dominated by minorities that are new to the rap scene. Out of all the up and coming underground rappers, most of them seem to be of Chinese/Indian/Eastern European descent. Other “underground” rappers of such a description to look up: Big Baby Gandhi, Lakutis, Despot.

Here are examples of their work:

Rakim is god
Nas is king

Unfortunately, neither has put out anything of note in the past few years.

As for newer artists, I like Sha Stimuli.

Yes! Finally some people who listen to some real hip hop.

Personally my favorites are:

A Tribe Called Quest, Eric B and Rakim, Sage Francis, Mos Def, Cunninlynguistics, Positive K, Boogie Down Productions, Ice Cube, Big L, Wu Tang Clan, NAS, Dilated Peoples, Arrested Development, Atmosphere (Slug is a legend), Diamond D, Digital Underground, The Roots, De la Soul, Chubb Rock, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Brother Ali, Bone Thugs, Black Milk, Army of the Pharoahs, Immortal Technique, 2pac, Biggie, Jake One, Living Legends, Jurassic 5, Keith Murray, Kool G Rap, KRS-One, Language Arts Crew, Large Professor, LL Cool J, Murs, Non Phixion, The Pharcyde, RA the Rugged Man

I could go on forever. I love underground/old school

whoops sorry just read where you said post three…
