I'm applying to Yale with the common app- under the yale supplement, there is a request for a fee waiver. I would LIKE to request that my application fee be waived, but I do not qualify for a collegeboard fee waiver. There is obviously a chance that Yale will reject my request....

Does anyone know if there is a cutoff annual income/number of dependents to qualify? For yale specifically?
Should I just pay the fee because the rejection of my request will delay my application???

I'm not sure so pleases do not quote me, but if you qualify for free or reduced lunch at your school then Yale will approve the fee waiver. In fact, I have heard that if you qualify for the no loan policy then you are also qualified for a fee waiver. With a school such as Yale I'm pretty sure they're not too concerned with fee waivers and such.

Number in Family vs. Family Income
1 -----------------------------
$27,310
2 -----------------------------
$32,070
3 -----------------------------
$36,180
4 -----------------------------
$38,970
5 -----------------------------
$42,040

I'm sure Yale would be willing to wiggle around if your family earns 5 grand or so more than the listed amount, especially if you delineate certain hardships. Also, it would help tremendously if your counselor includes a note saying that your family indeed would benefit from a fee waiver. I want to leave you with a quote from CC's dean just for some more perspective. Best of luck! :)

"The point of fee waivers is to ease a student's burden due to financial hardship, and they are not meant for those who simply don't feel like shelling out the extra dough, so only make the request if you truly need to. (Every once in a while, admission officials catch a student using a fee waiver who doesn't deserve one, and this can impact admission outcomes.)"

It's admirable of you to apply to Yale even with the financial constraints, and I'm certainly not at all implying that the quotation applies to you. Just want you to have all the facts!

I applied a couple of weeks ago and they accepted the written fee waiver and they said "no proof needed". I thought that was weird, but I financially fit the criteria anyway coming from a family that makes less than 10,000 a year.

Hmm I think the Yale Supplement form in the Common App actually states that if you want to apply for fee waiver, just state your family annual income and the number of dependents in the "Additional Information" column. Assume your fee waiver is approved until otherwise notified. I hope my own fee waiver gets approved too.
