Can anyone please share what they know about these courses: Science Literacy, Astronomy, Foundations of Chemistry, Human genetics, Evolution, Physics. I'd like your impressions of the difficulty of thses courses, how interesting they are, for a non-science student!
Thanks!

Are they not offering Cosmology with Colin Jessop? I heartily recommend that if they are.

Personally, practically the majority of the 250-piece class (the amount of students that actually showed up to class on the first day) despised Human Genetics and Dr. Bender. You basically have to know every little factoid and intricate detail from the book to even do well on the tests. I heard that he uses the same tests for some semesters, but I took it first semester and he happened to revamp the whole course for my term. The lectures are boring and he just reads off the slides.
As far as Ecology and Evolution (or whatever its called, the latter component of the course title changes every semester), it’s a pretty interesting class for a non-science type student. A huge chunk of it is what many would not even consider “hard-solid science.” It incorporates sociology and economics in describing and explaining sex and animal mating patterns. Dr. Filchak can be a smart alic but it’s an OK class.
My friend took Foundations of Chemistry and she seemed to enjoy it. She said it basically just covers the basics of chemistry all the way to some elementary Orgo. I would recomment this class to take.
Cosmology is cool but takes too much time and even has some papers. But I heard that you go out at night throughout the semester and observe the skies/stars. So if you’re into that, go for it.

u’d better check ND class search and NDtoday before you choose courses, just to make sure your professor has good feedback.
personally i would recommend either physics or chemistry. both are easy courses with horrible professors; if you are interested in evolution biology you can choose Filchak’s ecology and environmental issues. he’s a weird guy but a good teacher; i wouldn’t recommend human genetic unless you are a biology major. it’s just time consuming; as for astronomy, don’t take it unless you have way too much time and are capable of keeping yourself awake for long boring classes; i’ve never took Science Literacy before so i can’t give any personal opinion…

Science Literacy is a joke. If you don’t care about learning at all and just show up, you will get an A. My friends took it, never went to class, and had the highest grade in the class simply because they were just smarter than everyone else. He told me they put the “dumb” athletes in that class. Now I am not saying the athletes here are dumb, because they definitely aren’t, but that’s just what a friend who took the class told me.

Filchak’s class is interesting but the tests he purposely writes to trip you up. I took Intro to Chemistry my first semester and it was a really really really really boring class. My professor was the biggest joke ever and frankly no one every showed up to class. The only reason I even went was because I met two people in there that I became good friends with so I just went to chat.
