I filled my fafsa late. This was due to not getting my receiving my w-2 form in the mail, and being too busy with midterms, and moving to a new place to get my mothers financial informaiton whom is relectant to provide. I am transfer to UCSD and they said I get nothing but a small loan and its unsubdized. Do I have to pay for college all on my own with no grants whatsoever?

Are you instate? Do you qualify for Blue and Gold promise?

Generally, those who meet the deadline for filing FAFSA are the first ones who are taken care of when schools hand out those federal grants and other aid they may have available. Those who file late have to share what is left, if anything.

Unfortunately it sounds like by the time you got your FAFSA filed, they were already out of money.

Filing FAFSA late should make no difference for the Pell grant or subsidized direct loans if you are eligible for them. Pell grants direct loans do not run out like SEOG and Perkins do, but they do require that you have unmet need. The fact that your loans are unsubsidized indicates that you have no financial need. What is your FAFSA EFC?

FAFSA should be filed on time even if you don’t have all the information, you file it to get your place in line then correct it when the details come through. That does not help you now, but for future years and others reading this, just file in January and file it “will file”
