Film- Tisch, CAS, Gallatin

I really want to study film at NYU and I know that the Film and TV at the Kenbar Institute is very hard to get into, I am also not sure if I have a good enough portfolio to send. I wanted to know how hard it was to get into the Cinema Studies mayor at Tisch, or wether I should apply to CAS. On the other had my couselor really wants me to apply to Gallaton. Basically I am really confused about what school I should apply to.... Thanx!

if you want to study film to make films, you need to apply to tisch.

if you want to critique films, not make them, you still need to apply to tisch, but to the cinema studies major. you can take a cinema studies major through cas, but i believe (and someone correct me if im wrong, because im not entirely sure) you will still have to submit a portfolio for CS through tisch.

why does your counselor want you to apply to gallatin? gallatin is for people who want to combine different areas into one major, and you said that you want to do film, which is a regular major.

basically, it sounds like you need to apply to tisch for film/tv because that's what you said you want to major in, and that's how to do it. if your portfolio isn't good enough, it's not good enough. there aren't backdoors. just work really hard on it until the deadline and try your best.

(if you have any questions about admissions for film for nyu or whatever, im not an admissions counselor or anything, but i am a freshman film major here this year and id be glad to talk to you about my experience with applications and whatnot from last year, so feel free to PM me)

This might also be helpful: http://cinema.tisch.nyu.edu/object/cinemaFAQ.html You might also want to consider consulting the pdf version of the CAS bulletin, which describes both the Cinema Studies (and the crossover with Tisch) and also Dramatic Literature (which also offers some cinema studies courses as well). I'm not sure about the cinema studies portfolio if a student is applying to the program through CAS. They might actually have to go through Tisch to submit their credentials for review. I have an undergrad B.A. student in the Cinema Studies program at Tisch, and a portfolio had to be submitted to Tisch in order to be considered for admittance to the program and is in fact a Tisch student in their Cinema Studies program. The MAP is also a requirement for the B.A. The sibling is a new graduate with the B.F.A. in Film from Tisch.
scrapnel: Best of luck with your studies at Tisch Film!
