To current UCI students, could you guys roughly estimate how much you had spent in total for your freshmen year? Was it around
$28,065.00 like it states in the UCI fin. aid?

The total cost of attendance was estimated to be around $25,000 this past year, but fees have increased, and it should total to be around there $28,000 if estimated for the upcoming year, give or take up to $700?

On the UCI site it says I’m getting Cal Grant A but on the Cal Grant site I’m getting cal grant B. Which should I believe?

^^^ That’s weird. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

^^ Call CAL Grant on Monday, right away. Cal A is much much much better.

<a href=“CSAC - Student Landing Home”>CSAC - Student Landing Home; <— this is the link to login to check your grant?

Well, it won’t allow me to create an account… how did you guys login?

compaq10, what is your reasoning behind cal grant A being better than cal grant B?

I just accepted work study and the loans, but I have no idea as to what I do next. On step 4 of 4, it says to complete my to-do list, but from the looks of the list, it looks like it’ll take a long time (as long as August?). Would anyone be able to guide me through this process? It’s really confusing me and I’m having a difficult time with it…

Cal Grant A receives more money than B, I believe.

All I know is that the school decides which is the best possible package for you.

One grant isn’t necessarily better, just because A offers more money for the first year does not make it better, since they will balance out the money distributed by increasing your ‘UCI Grant’ to even it out.

^ It’s true. The system sucks like that because even if you have lots of other scholarships or grants a high Cal Grant might just decrease to balance it out. It really depends on your EFC though. My opinion would be to take Cal Grant A because it can’t hurt you in taking the higher one. If anything it will be balanced out like you said and likewise would have happened with Cal Grant B anyways.

EFC= 11

net cost= 5,500

i was offered work-study $1,500 but does anyone know how to get the $2000 offer instead?

I assume that they offer you less work-study because you have less need. I think that it maxes at 2,000. But that’s for people that are really screwed over in loans, like myself. You can always try and call the Financial aid office. For some other schools I was offered 4000 in work study. That might also be a possibility at Irvine. Call.

For those who plan on doing work study-who are we working for and what is required of us to do?

i checked mine yesterday and it says to accept as soon as possible. does accepting your financial aid award bind you to go to UCI?

i will be commuting from home… and they still included “Living Expenses (Housing/Meals, Transportation, Personal)” into my total amount. does anyone know how i could take this part off my total? please help meeeee.

@dkwon,

work study is just a program where the government offers to pay a large chunk of your salary, and your employer pays the rest. You can be working for anyone that has a work-study program, there are lots of different positions you can work on campus as a work-study.

All that is required for you to do is to accept the “award”, but technically, I wouldn’t call it an award until you actually get a work-study job.

On average, how much do you guys spend on books and supplies? *assuming we get the books for a cheap price online or from a friend)
