I was accepted a few weeks ago off of the waitlist at WM and have been so excited ever since. The one problem is that my grades for two classes have dropped a letter, not because I haven't been studying but because they are really difficult. On my midterm report i got a B in Calculus Honors and a B in Physics Honors. Now at graduation I have a C- in both classes. Will WM possible revoke my admissions off of the waitlist even if all my other grades have remained the same. This has been a big source of stress for a while and any response would be appreciated!

does that mean you got an F in both classes 2nd semester? (B + F) / 2 = C-? Or you got C- in the 2nd semester, so your year grades are in the C+ range? Going from B’s to F’s is a large jump.

fructose’s link probably has the best info available.

TribePride, are you applying as Freshmen?

In calculus I got a c+ for the 3rd quarter and will have a D for the 4th quarter. In physics I got a B for the 3rd quarter and will have a c- for the 4th quarter. I am assuming that I will have a c- average as the worst possible outcome after my finals. In reality though I will probably have a c/c+ average for calc for the year and anywhere from a C- to a C+ for physics.
I plan on writing a letter explaining how my physics teacher was switched in the middle of the year to a new one who does not have anytime after school to help me. Also, in my letter I will talk about my calc grade. I take full responsibilty for that grade, it is just very difficult for me even with a tutor that I got. I don’t know what else I can do. I am just very worried about having my admissions revoked.

And yes I was admitted as a freshman

Also I have a spot on one of the varsity athletic teams so if worse comes to worse I guess I could ask the coach for help. I do not want to do this though because it is a point of pride for me that I got admitted as a normal student and not athlete.

TribePride… I think you will be ok. A switched teacher can definitely have an impact, and having a tutor in calculus will show that you are doing everything you can. You are challenging yourself and maybe coming up a little bit short. No harm in that. You said your other grades remain strong, so they will know that you are not just taking the 2nd semester because you got into college, you are having trouble for specific reasons.

TribePride14, W&M reviews the final transcript of every admitted student to see if there is a change in an academic record. Given that you will finish with 2 Cs (grades lower than we were likely to see when reviewing your application), we would recommend that you contact your regional dean before your final transcript arrives. This way you are taking the initiative to recognize your academic downturn and to explain yourself on the front end rather than waiting for your admission officer to send you a letter asking for an explanation in June.

2 final Cs is unlikely to lead to any drastic measures but the Admission Committee does appreciate an explanation of why the downturn occurred.

Thank you so much for the advice! My letter is sent explaining my situation. Amazingly in my last week of class I pulled my grades up in both classes so I am about one point away from a B- average in both classes

^5, tribepride14!!!

Tribe Pride, glad you sent the letter. Note that you’re super close to the B- in the letter so your regional dean has all the information available. He/she will respond to the letter via letter or email as soon as they receive it. If you wish to know who specifically to direct the letter to, let us know and we can provide you with contact info for your regional dean.
