I was just wondering - how many NMF are there? Just a ballpark figure.

Head of School called them in to his office after lunch today and school is preparing a Press release.

Just north of Houston.

So glad to know. So glad it is good news. Whew.

Emailing your regional admissions representative at any school to which you have not yet been accepted is apparently good practice this time of year anyway. This is the perfect excuse to get in touch.

Still waiting.

According to NMSC each year there are typically 16,000 Semi-Finalists, which get pared to 15,000 Finalists

The entire process is best summarized here:

Our HS always seems to wait for the media release day to tell the kids - they waited in Sept, and they are apparently waiting now (even though it is not required of them). I think I saw on one of these threads that the media day was Feb7? So maybe our HS will tell the kids tomorrow.

My Daughter got notifcation of Finalist status at school today. We are in Illinois.

Still waiting in Cleveland. Big fuss over signing day though.

^^Yeah…lots of talk and news reports about signing day here, too. A local TV news crew was even at the high school when I passed by this morning. You can be sure they weren’t there to do a story on academic achievements. Ha!

Just got the notification today. EDIT: Am in Arizona if anyone is curious.

Was wondering if it’s worth notifying any of the colleges that I’ve applied that I’ve received finalist status. I talked to some other people and they said it was probably not worth it because it’s likely colleges are aware of the selection process (and going from 15k to 14k or whatnot is not a very significant increase in prestige).

I’m curious what other people’s inputs are (I applied to schools like Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, etc. and already indicated that I was a semi-finalist at the time of application).

Notified today by Principal: Finalist. We are in Missouri

Petersuu, I think it is worth telling them. They have thousands of applications they are reviewing, and probably won’t go look on a list to see if you made it (they probably rely on you to tell them). Colleges, even the good ones, like to brag about how many NMFs they have in their freshman class. They don’t brag about the number of semi-finalists…

Found our our son was NM finalist from a post on the school district facebook page! That’s the only notice we had.

School FINALLY notified son today - yippee! Can’t believe they made us wait this long but what a relief. W were really sweating that C+ from junior year.

Jparent, congrats! – parent of junior with a likely C+ in AP English this year – very glad to hear it’s still possible to make NMF with a C on the transcript!

Heard today!! My son was called to the GC office and congratulated by the Principal today.

Am I the only one where the school has not notified them?? This happened with the semifinalist results no one ever told me…

Still waiting in NJ. Our school also waits for the media release date, which was today. They don’t seem to tell the kids until we get the actual letter in the mail. We don’t expect to hear anything from the school; we’ll just wait to hopefully get the letter in the mail.

Still waiting in MN. Getting a little annoyed… D has to send email to colleges to let them know about a schedule change, and wanted to include this info. She also has a job application ready to submit, and thought this would be a good addition (it is at a math tutoring company, so a nice addition to the resume). She is holding it since the weekend waiting. C’mon…

I agree with you intparent - it is a little annoying. I can’t believe that the schools are notified way in advance of the student/parents. It says that the schools are sent out a letter and certificate on January 31st. I don’t know why the schools have to keep the kids waiting to hear. They are experiencing enough anxiety just waiting to hear from colleges. It would be a nice relief for them to hear about their National Merit status.
