I’m a transfer student interested in one of these majors, but confused on which one to choose. Leaning towards finance since I don’t speak clearly or eloquently due to my speech Impediment and don’t think I’ll be a fan of firing people. On flip the side I’m just not strong in math and had always given me anxiety. Also thinking finance would be less stressful work environment. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
HR people don’t usually fire people…they prep the hiring managers to do it themselves:)
A speech impediment should not hold you back from that. Also, in most places, Finance is much more stressful than HR IMO. If you want to do HR, go for it.
If your better with people I’d go with HR, if your more analytical and math focused I would go with finance. I don’t think finance would be good for someone that thinks they are not good with math.
Are you already at a university? Have you looked at the finance curriculum? Sometimes there’s different tracks, and some programs are more math-heavy than others.
HR would be super stressful though and in order to do well it’s good to have some Labor studies and psychology classes. Finance can lead to lot of different jobs plus it tends to connote “hard worker” so it comes with an added bonus for internships and jobs.
Thanks for your feedback.
I definitely stink at math, but think I can over come the anxiety and be fine if I hire tutors.
No I’m attending this Summer. I did look at both core curriculum’s their fairly similar so not a deal breaker either way.
Yes I heard HR is pretty stressful as you have to deal with employee issues and management where you have to be the mediator. I honestly think my stuttering would get in the way to be an effective communicator.
Thanks for positive tip on finance.
I heard from Mark Cuban recently that liberal arts in the new hot major 3-5 years from now. Interesting…
Philosophy anyone???
Philosophy is already “hot” when combined with business skills because it’s a highly analytical major.
MYOS,
You just gave me the idea of a double major in Philosophy & Finance.
I just wanted to put the note in that while communication might be more important in some fields than others, it’s going to be important in finance, too. You may have to give financial presentations or explain calculations and projections to business leaders.
I also don’t necessarily think HR is more stressful than finance. HR has lots of different roles, and it would entirely depend on what you were doing - traveling the country as a college recruiter or mediating employee conflict is going to be different than processing payroll or brainstorming the company’s new industry hire program. Some will have more interaction with employees than others. It depends on the size of your company, too - at bigger companies you may have a more defined role doing something specific; at a small company, you may be a jack of all HR trades, if that makes sense. Similarly, it would depend on what you were doing in finance. If you were a finance person in a department of three in a small regional company, for example, that may be less stressful than being a financier on Wall Street or at a large bank in an urban center or something. It entirely depends on the type of job you select, not the field or career as a whole.
If you’re not strong in math, but you like math and you are willing to develop your math skills to be stronger - then finance may work for you. But if you aren’t strong in math AND you don’t like math and it gives you anxiety…a finance major may not be a good choice for you. Finance includes a lot of math!
If you think that your stuttering might be an impediment - there are tools and resources to help you get better! Find out if your college has speech therapy, and there are organizations like Toastmasters that can help you get better at speaking publicly and communicating with others.
