Finance/Math Major?

So it looks like I'm going to be attending Kelley School of Business next year as a direct admit, and was wondering if I could major in finance and minor in math or double major in the two. I am looking at possibly getting into investment banking but have an actuary as a sort of backup plan. Would this type of major be suitable for these two fields? Is there anything better?

You don’t need advanced math to do investment banking. If you double major in math & finance, however, and get a high GPA, you will look stronger academically to investment banks. IMO, you should only do a 2nd major in math if you can do so without killing your GPA. If you’re passionate about math, you shouldn’t have much trouble doing a 2nd major (as you’ll be more motivated to do the work).

I have a question. I am a freshman in NYU and I am majoring in Electrical Engineering/ Comp Sci, Physics or Mathematics, haven’t really decided yet. But I wanted to know if I would be able to become an Investment Banker without a degree in finance. A friend of mine is a middle eastern studies major and got an internship with Chase.

^ Are you in NYU or NYU-Poly? Your ability to “break-in” to investment banking is largely determined by the prestige of your college (or undergrad b-school). If you go to HYPS, you can major in anything and get into banking if you network and have a good GPA.

Also, Chase isn’t a Bulge Bracket. Aim for the BB’s if you want to go into investment banking.

Im in NYU, but Im apart of the Dual degree program so I take my Engineering classes at Poly. So it is possible for me to become and investment banker? thank you!

Since you’re set on i-banking, you should really read this post on Mergers and Inquisitions: [Investment Banking Major | M&I](What's The Best College Major For Investment Banking?). This blog is run by a former investment banker at a top BB who went to Stanford. In addition, you can post your question in the comments section of this article and the people who run the blog (mostly former i-bankers) will answer it.

Although you can technically “break-in” with any major, I would highly suggest majoring in Econ and CS (or Math). An Econ + CS (or Math) double major will look impressive to recruiters and position you well for any i-banking jobs. If its possible however, I would suggest doing an internal transfer to Stern. I know that its difficult, but a Stern business degree is certainly worth the effort.
