I'm currently a Sophomore attending a 2 year institution with a 3.3-3.4 GPA that will be transferring next fall. Finance is the area I'm really interested in majoring , but I just don't know what schools I should consider transferring too. I prefer schools close to or in Virginia, especially when I have to pay for my own college. Could anyone give me some advice? I would really appreciate it!! Thank You.

University of Virginia should be a good choice for you if you are looking at the top schools. But there is many other good schools in and around Virginia. UVA is the state school, so the expenses are lower than the expenses in private schools.

The other thing is the transfer admissions. I do not know how tough it is to get into the top school as a transfer. But I know that it is tougher to get there as a transfer than as a freshman. Are you looking at the top schools?

The other possible choices for you: College of William and Mary(VA,state), Wake Forest University(NC,private), Virginia Tech(VA,state), UNC(NC,state), North Carolina State(NC,state), University of Alabama(AL,state), Samford(AL,private), Auburn(AL,state).

How far are you considering to go away from VA? What about Florida?

I want to go somewhere that is affordable and has a good or pretty good Finance program at that particular school. In VA there is a automatic acceptant admission for transferable students in any Va college or university, but its still hard to get into UVA and W&M. I was thinking about schools in Va or somewhere close like Maryland and North Carolina. I just hope a 3.3-3.4 GPA is alright.

What about University of Maryland—College Park(state school)? It should be a lil bit easier to get into Univ. of Maryland than to get into UVA or W&A. It is a pretty good school I think. Another choice could be North Carolina State. Have you already done a list of colleges which you like?

UVA (McIntire) is hard to get into for transfers.

Yes, I have. I'm trying to apply to couple local schools such as Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason University, and James Madison University. If i went to one of these schools for the next two years and then transfer to a better school for my MBA such as UVA, University of Maryland college park, UNC Chapel Hill, or Penn State... would that be a great idea??

You can't just transfer to get your MBA. You will need to get work experience first (probably 4 to 5 years of it).

dndmn9: W & M has a top 30 national undergrad business program and on their transfer student website (http://www.wm.edu/admission/?id=3143) they list a 3.5 as a competitive GPA.

If you work very hard on your grades right now (and have some good recommendations and essays), I think you have a chance at W & M.

I agree with you decision to apply to VCU, GMU, and JMU...as you should be very competitive at those schools. Have you thought about Va Tech?

Isn't Va Tech only know for there architecture and engineering programs? There not strong in the business field. I believe?
Which school do you believe has a better finance program between Virginia Commmonwealth UNiversity, George Mason University, and James Madison University?

I'm not familiar with any of the schools, but it would seem to me that one advantage of Va. Tech is its size (and thus, I would expect a lot of employers to recruit there, regardless of its ranking).

VA Tech has a good business program that definitely seems to be among the top 100 in the nation. Since I think the school itself is ranked around 70 by USNWR, it seems to be a solid major there. Engineering and tech related majors are definitely better at VT but the business is still just as good as somewhere like JMU.
