Ummm, borngeedad, I think it would be remiss on the part of your son should take a school out of consideration just because there was a possible fault in the postal system or an administrative error on Rose's behalf. I'm sure he received some kind of aid, and if it's that disconcerting that it may not have arrived only a week after others began receiving theirs, I'm sure you could call the financial aid office today and ask about it and they'd be willing to help you. The number is : (812) 877-8259 or 800-248-7448

nic767 ~ I have some sympathy for borngeedad. Something similar is happening at my house, where DD has been accepted elsewhere and offered significant merit money, but has heard nothing from RHIT. These other schools are calling her and showing interest.
I suggest a process improvement for RHIT next year: prepare all the aid packages and then send them all simultaneously. While this may seem like a complication to one step in a long process of recruiting a class, it will be received on the parent's end much more positively. It also mirrors what many other colleges are doing.

Thanks nic767. Rose-Hulman has one disadvantage, not that many people have heard about it in the west coast, and this is a handicap when looking for job later in the west coast. National research universities are safer bet. Out of the 4 top ranking universities in his major, he applied for 3. Yesterday he was accepted into one and is waiting for the other two. So that means he is not likely to go to Rose-Hulman and should not bother the financial aid office.

Our son received his financial aid award notification on March 12th. He also received the Rose-Hulman Merit Scholar award like some of the other students postings. Even with the Merit Scholar award, the financial aid package can be described as marginal at best. Really not enough to lure a National Merit Finalist kid to their school.

i'm an international so i got much less than you guys, but i'm still getting some.
will there be any opportunity to apply for more scholarships as freshman or sophomore?

reasonabledad, Rose does prepare and send out financial aid awards out all at once as long as they have received all the information they need. I have not received my package yet, but I'm sure that's because I only submitted my FAFSA a few days before the aid packages were mailed (March 13 I believe). Rose wants to send out all the packages together, but they also want to get them out as soon as possible so some may not be ready to go with the big batch.

Well I received my upgraded aid package... and I'm receiving a not so vastly improved $13,000. I really, and I mean really wanted to go here. Looks like it's not going to happen though.

My son finally got his package on the 29th, that was a sunday which means that it was in a neighbor's mailbox on Saturday. It was mailed on Mar 25. He got the same amount of merit aid as Lonesin, since his stat is only slightly above that of Linesin, so I guess it is the standard.

Actually the amount is acceptable. I am looking for parity with the in state public, this does not quite make it but at least it is in the same ballpark. I don't blame Rose-Hulman since they don't have a huge endowment, so what they did was nice. The problem is timing. For the other schools if they offer merit aid, this means they really want that student and realize that the student may also be accepted by higher ranking school. So they send out merit aid package early to gain the student's mind share, often invite these students to go to some exclusive XYZ day. The hope is that student will fall in love with the school and ignore acceptance from higher ranking school later. By the time he got the package his mindset had already changed and was ready to send in the SIR to the other school.

An extra $13,000 is pretty good...

It went from 12,000 to 13,000. Sorry for the poor wording.

Financial aid came in, and was acceptable. Looks like DD wants to attend RHIT!
