This might be a totally inane question, but do CCC transfer students get the same financial aid opportunities at UC campuses as first-time college goers? I'll likely be returning to full-time academic study in my late twenties (currently pursuing a career in the arts) and plan to transfer from a CCC. Will I be eligible for financial aid, or are transfer students sort of "screwed" in that respect? Whenever I look at net price calculators for various UC campuses, they always emphasize that the numbers are for first time college attendees...I'm a little scared, as I'll be making VERY little money in my profession and don't want to have to rely on my parents, nor do I want to take out a huge amount of loan money for undergrad (I'm pretty sure I'll end up going to grad school). Any one have any experience with this?

I am a recently admitted transfer students. I have no income and neither does my mother. I have been accepted to 5 UCs. They all offered me somewhere between 18k and 21k. It does not make a difference.

Yes, you will be eligible for financial aid. You said you are in your late twenties, so you are considered an independent student. I think if you are married and/or older than 24, you are automatically considered independent, meaning only your income and assets matter, not your parents’. Also, if your income is less than 80k a year, there’s the Blue and Gold opportunity, which ensures that at least your tuition and fees will be covered by financial aid and/or UC grants. I believe you will be eligible for all types of grants there exist :)

Yes, I would likely be 25-27 when I apply, and would be making WELL UNDER $80k. I had no idea the Blue and Gold opportunity existed. SBVett, you have made my day haha! This definitely is a huge relief to hear!

I didn’t know about the Blue and Gold until it showed up on my Financial Aid Award from UCI. You can imagine how happy I was, haha. Glad I could help! :)
