Financial Aid Issue -- Requesting More Information?

Hello everyone!

I am an admitted student for the Class of 2017 at UW-Madison. I am an OOS Student who is a low income (EFC = 0), first generation American, first generation high school graduate, and URM. Currently, I am facing some difficulties with receiving a financial aid package. I have already submitted my FAFSA form in February. However, the Office of Financial Aid have been requesting more information such as the Family Information Form, Parent Tax Return Transcript, Student Tax Return Transcript, and Dependent Verification Doc. Consequently, I completed and mailed in the forms last week. But as of now, the office is requesting for an information request about a parent's property (tax information - schedule E). What I am wondering is why would the Office of Financial Aid require so much information?

Right now, one of my major concerns is the amount of financial aid I will be receiving. I am still in the process of making an official decision on what college I will be attending in the fall and I am most interested in viewing my financial situation before accepting admission.

Any comments, suggestions, etc. would be highly appreciated!

I had an extremely similar situation and called about it. The rep on the phone said that the amount of time passed doesn’t matter – UW doesn’t run out of any aid for OOS students because it’s all done according to a formula that you can calculate using the net price calc. Now, your EFC could change if the post-FAFSA information you sent to UW causes it to. That would affect your aid. But from what I understand, the amount of time passed does not affect the amount of aid received at UW OOS.

UW is requesting all of that information because they want to give you as much aid as you are eligible for. Some students with very low EFC and whose parents have very little assets may receive very large grants that cover tuition and more, even students who are non-residents.

It sounds like your parents own a rental property, so I assume UW needs to see the details on Schedule E since the income/loss from the rental property does not necessarily reflect your parents’ cash flow if there is depreciation expense.

From your other post, I see you probably from California, and interested in Chemical and Biological Engineering.
