Financial Aid Issues, Need Advice

Hi guys, I’m new to the site and hope I’m doing this correctly.

So at my current Community College, I am almost finished with my A.A.S. and was heavily considering transferring to get a Bachelor’s in Computer Science. When I spoke to a University about this, I found out that most of my classes would transfer but that I still have a few more that I should take before making the jump. I was told that I would need Calculus 1 and II, a general Computer Science class, and Accounting I and II. I thought this would be simple and a small problem but I was wrong.

Apparently at the time of my enrollment, 2 specific math classes were required for me to get my degree and those classes could not be switched with calculus I and II. I took one of the mandatory classes and then managed to arrange switching my other mandatory math for Calculus I after jumping through hundreds of hoops. BUT when I went to add the class, another adviser refused to do it without a letter from the dean so I’m back to square one since nobody will get on the same page.

I also found out that my financial aid will not pay for the other classes I would need to transfer and that they would have to be paid for out of pocket, including Calc. II, since they weren’t part of my curriculum when I enrolled. I estimated the cost to pay for them myself and it is unfortunately not possible for me to do it on my own. I applied for scholarships as well but have yet to hear back about them.

Is there anything else I can do to help my situation? I’m already having to stay an additional year as it is because of problems with the way my classes were done the last 4 semesters and just want to get this over with. I was told I could attempt to add another curriculum and “double major” so that my financial aid would cover the Computer Science class but apparently that might not even work either.

Would it be easier to just graduate with the classes they want me to take and then re-enroll and stay even longer? I’m at my wits end here and have no idea what I’m doing since everyone seems to give me a different answer at my college. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you need the AA to transfer? I would prioritize requirements at future university over requirements for AA from current community college.

One problem with not transferring the degree is that open may lose credits which may take him longer to graduate vs carrying over all of the credits from the degree.

The challenge is that as op stated if the classes are not part of the degree program they will not be covered by financial aid.

Can you finish the degree and take the calculus class at after you transfer? Is there another CC that you can take the course at during the summer for less money ?

If you’re interested in CS as it applies to business, then maybe look into the transfer requirements for an MIS major. That might better leverage the coursework you’ve already taken. In general, most CS programs will require a couple of semesters of calculus and at least one intro CS class to transfer into that major.

@sybbie719 I could if I was attending the college on campus. I was planning to attend Old Dominion through their online distance learning program since it’s easier than moving across the state and seemed like a great opportunity with my financial situation. Unfortunately they don’t offer the calculus as part of their distance learning program. Same thing with the Accounting class I need. I believe they offer the CS class though, I kind of just wanted to get it out of the way before transferring.

I was actually considering taking classes during the summer but I was told that if I did that, then I wouldn’t qualify for financial aid during the fall semester and I don’t think I can get a straight answer before the end of the final day to enroll in the summer semester (this monday)

How were those calc classes NOT a part of your course plan at a CC? Weren’t you a CS major there?

@mom2collegekids Nope, just a general/transfer Science major. When I enrolled, the computer science specialization was still new and had no gen. ed. classes. I was told that it wouldn’t transfer since it was a new program and they said I was better off going with a regular science degree.

Since that time though, they’ve changed a lot. They recently added gen. ed. classes to that degree and the Science degree that I’m pursuing has any math needed to transfer. However, if I switch to something else and then switch back, a lot of the classes I’ve already taken wont even matter lol. Its such a mess.

How much would it cost you to take the math classes at a CC over the summer?

@mom2collegekids The only math class I can take over the summer is one that won’t transfer for me, the ones that will are only offered during the fall and spring semesters.

If I am unable able to get financial aid to at least pay for Calc. 1 like they said I should be able to do, then it will be close to $600 without the book. I’m going to talk to a different councilor tomorrow to get them to see about that again. My cheapest out of pocket class would be like $499
