Financial Aid Package

@Cassy94

I posted this before and see if it might help you out my CAP Advisor is pretty awesome

My CAP advisor metioned this at one point when giving her lecture.

she told me that if it’s a school that you really want to go to (FSU) and you notice that another school has offered you more aid(UCF)

you can talk with a financial advisor at the school you want to go to (FSU) and explain to them your situation and tell them how you really want to go to their school but another has offered you more and see if it’s possible they can offer you more aid.

She always says that there is no problem with asking

edit: and I just realized “ilovetodance” posted the exact same thing lol :)

Thank you ilovetodance & josephalexandra

I will definitely be calling them today and I’ll keep you posted on what they say

I called & basically I wont be going to FSU :(

Oh no :frowning: You can always try again, even if just through email. Try seeing a counselor at your school about it. If it makes you feel any better I’m in the same boat. I just found out that I have an extremely low chance for fsu on-campus housing since my priority number is 8011. Now I have to decide if I’m still going to FSU…

lovetodance- There are some really NICE furnished apartments all around FSU, filled with students and that are cheaper than the dorms. Don’t let off campus housing sway you. If you can, go check it out. You may be very surprised!

Thank you, I sure hope so :slight_smile: I’ve been looking online and found a couple of places, but not much… I will be up there in a couple of weeks for Golden Girl auditions, so I may be able to check some out then.

I wont be going to FSU either! The package they gave me sucks…1800 plus pell grants is a petty award (even though i have full brightfutures and doorways). Especially, when UF gave me the Florida Opportunity Scholarship (full ride), brightfutures, small federal grant, pell grant, and florida prepaid.

niqueb1,

They offered me the same thing & I do agree that it’s petty. My mother already called for refunds (without me being there) so I won’t be going there either.

UF is offering you a great financial aid package and & it is a great school so I would suggest you go there if they have your major & everything. Good luck!

I’m over the shock & I’m already looking at other schools who are giving me a full ride. My advisor told me it’s normal to choose a school based on financial aid.

Just out of curiosity, when did you guys apply for Financial Aid? I applied Jan 3rd and got EVERYTHING I need for Fall/Spring, With one perkins loans, everthing else was grants and scholarships.

My daughter filled out her FAFSA on 1.1.11 (even though it wasn’t supposed to be available until 1.2.11) and FSU had it on her Status Check on 1.3.11. She got almost everything she needs with $11K in scholarships and grants and $5500 in Stafford Loans. The only reason they did not offer her Work Study is because she checked “I don’t know” on the FAFSA. Had she checked “Yes” on the FAFSA they would have offered her Work Study instead of loans per the financial aid office.

I filled out the FAFSA in Jan. I even called to ask if it was late and they said no. That’s just what they’re offering me ;p

i just tried to check my financial aid tookit now, but it says the system is down. :(

casssy, if u dont mind me asking but what was your Fafsa EFC?

ad238gh - It does that almost every night. Sometimes it comes back up in an hour and sometimes it stays down for quite a while. Just keep checking every hour or two and you will likely find it is back up.

So… what should we do if bright futures isn’t showing up?

Did you get your information submitted for initial eligibility to be determined at the first deadline? First wave of BF eligibility came out on March 2nd but you had to have turned in all the required information (and your high school had to have turned in all the required information) by the deadlines outlined at the link below. You can also check your BF status on this website. If you already know this, have checked and are eligible for BF on this website I would call FSU and just ask them what the deal is. My daughter’s BF fell in at the same time as her financial aid.

^thanks for clarifying! I was wondering why Bright Futures was included on the awards. My school didnt meet the first deadline so BF is still pending.

I got full pell grant, and full stafford, but my efc is 0. Im confused if this will be enough or not for me, is there any kind of information out there about where these monies will be going? This whole financial aid stuff is so confusing, since up until a year ago I thought my parents had everything covered, good jobs, thousands saved, then they lost their jobs, spent all their savings, and have only been collecting unemployment all year.

@Sophia

U have to make sure u can afford about 18,000-19,000/year. This is for on campus housing (aprox. 4500-6000 dollars/year depending on which dorm you choose) Meal Plan (3900/year) Tuition (Aprox. 5000) and Personal expenses (Books, clothes, etc. aprox. 1000-2000/year) and if you dont have health insurance your looking at another 1500/year for the schools MANDATORY health insurance. There are alot of way to make this cheaper, like living off campus which will save you anywhere from 2000-3000 a year, choosing a cheaper dorm, choosing a dorm that doesnt require a meal plan, buying used books. There is also the Southern Scholarship Foundation that provides CHEAP housing for NEEDY students. Its about 1900/year If Im not mistaken. You have to make sure that you have enough to cover all of your expenses. Also be aware that the Staffords are LOANS which will require you to pay them back after graduation. Full Pell is good. If all you got was Pell and Stafford than that may not be nearly enough for you. My adivce would be to call the FA office at FSU and ask for more money, they might be able to work with you since your EFC is 0. I can tell you that I got full COA (cost of attendance, 19,000) covered through financial aid with an EFC of 0. This was mostly Grants, Bright Futures, and a Perkins Loan. Hope this helps. :-)

Yeah it helps a lot, thank you! I still have to apply for bright futures, but if i do, I have good enough stats for the highest one, but that only covers the tuition part of it, which sadly, is becoming the cheapest part of going to school for a lot of colleges. Im working 60 hours a week right now at 2 different jobs (i’m home schooled), saving all my money, which should be more than 10k by the end of the summer. I plan on using this money for spending, gas, food, car maintenance, etc. and saving the rest to be applied for the following years tuition, or wherever needed really. Im not sure why they didnt give me more aid, since 11k just seems so low, but I will definitely try calling them and asking for more. And I do realize that loans are loans, but I am hoping my parents financial situation might turn around eventually and that they might be able to help me eventually.
