Financial aid

I am applying RD and waiting not so patiently for my decision. I have heard from the other 4 schools I am applying to and have gotten in to all of them. W&M is my only reach school. Does anyone know what the average financial award is for out of state students? Without any aid W&M is unaffordable at around 42k per year for family although it’s my first choice. Thanks in advance for any help.

From the W & M website ( http://www.wm.edu/admission/financialaid/information/faqs/faqsprospectives/index.php</a> ):

Unfortunately, W & M’s financial picture makes it impossible for the school to meet every student’s full need. For OOS students, finaid is often composed of loans, with little grant money. Best of luck with your application! If you receive good news in March but can’t attend because of the finaid offer, you can always appeal. If that doesn’t work (and it usually doesn’t), another option is to transfer in after a year or two at a less expensive school.

There really isn’t an average award for out-of-state. Since every family’s finances are different an average number aid dollar doesn’t really make sense because what you are awarded is dependent on your family’s finances and not anyone else’s.

W&M generally meets about 80% of an out-of-state student’s demonstrated need through a combination of loans, grants, and work study. How much of each type of aid you receive depends again on your family’s individual finances.

W&M will release admission decisions in early April (we do not practice rolling admission so while other schools you’ve applied to are able to admit students as they apply our process is such that we need to review the entire pool before rendering decisions). Financial Aid awards will be emailed shortly after admission decisions are released.
