Financial Aid

Hey guys, how generous is UT with grants if you come from a low income family? I've been accepted, but the only way I'm going to go to UT is if I don't have a lot of debt by the time I graduate.

On the college board's website they have profiles for a lot of schools. This is the information from the financial aid section of UT's profile.

Number who applied for need-based aid: 5,100
Number who were judged to have need: 4,200
Number who were offered aid: 4,200
Number who had full need met: 3,600
Average percent of need met: 89%
Average financial aid package: $9,800
Average need-based loan: $3,800
Average need-based scholarship or grant award: $6,800
Average non-need based aid: Not reported
Average indebtedness at graduation: $17,000

Just as an interesting bit of information, most Ivy league schools and other prominent private schools have a similar "Average indebtedness at graduation".

Good luck! :)

Thanks for the quick reply that info is really helpful, but has anyone else had any personal experiences coming from a low income family and how much aid you got?

Grants are pretty much a draw.

If you are low-income, you definitely have a higher chance than anyone else. I know of more people who received grants than scholarships. Just make sure to apply early with the FAFSA (as in once your parents have filed and received their income tax). It's kind of a first come first serve basis.

I received a small grant, and I'm a bit surprised I did (single mom with middle to high income raising two college kids - mainly I thought because of her income).

if you don't mind ortaluce, can i ask what income range your mom's income fell? because i am worried about my financial aid (since i won't be getting federal aid due to not having a perm. residence) and i am trying to figure out about how much aid i can expect

I don't remember what scale they use but her income falls between $80,000 to $90,000.

I just received a small grant of $1166/semester, but hey free money is good money =)

wait so do you have to apply for grants? or are they just offered to you by filling out the fafsa?

ortaluce: thanks for answering. also, i'm kinda relieved cuz my parents make much less.

I Hope UT: you are automatically considered for grants by filling out the fafsa

!xobile I noticed you said that you didn't have a perm. residence status currently. If you are a Texas resident by requirements of the university, you can apply for the TASFA which is a state based application for non documented residents. That's what I plan on filling out and can be found at CollegeForTexans.com: Welcome . Hope that helps.

yeah i knew about the tasfa, but thanks. hey any idea when the tasfa will be available?

^^ I know, when is TASFA gonna be available?

i dont know i keep checking everyday for it. I went by the financial aid office for my school and they said something about they can take the fafsa form and sign off on that for tasfa or something i dont know i would go ask them about it though. good luck!

well i got 5,500 in grants from ut per semester.
along with 3,000 in scholarship from outside per semester.
i say thats pretty generous.

i found a link to the 09-10 tasfa app.
AIE | AIE - TASFA Application

OMG THX soo much Rabbit777

^^ btw, where do we send the TASFA 2?

your welcome.

I think you send it to the financial aid office for your school. I would call and make sure though just to be safe considering it does have sensitive information on it.

i don't know if that's a legitimate 09-10 tasfa
one, it's not on the usual collegefortexas.com website
on that website, the 09-10 application is not even available
also, from the tamu page, when i click on tasfa, it's still taking me to the 08 - 09 tasfa
the website look a little fishy
so be careful
