financial aid

I got accepted for summer term 2010, submitted my FAFSA January 25th, and I have been checking myucf for my financial aid status and nothing has shown up yet. Did something go wrong?

Not to hijack but when do they give aid?

They will start sending out letters sometime this month. I called =P

A few grants and awards have come up on mine for the 2011 link, they also put an “early estimate federal pell grant” slot in there…have they asked you for verification? I had to send them stuff in february after sending in my fasfa and then things started popping up there. Only thing is the 2010 section, it isn’t even hyperlinked (since it says no financial aid data available i guess) and I’m wondering if I’ll be even getting anything for summer? Or maybe im just impatient haha

The only thing I’m seeing right now is the Bright Futures scholarship. I sent in all the required info already, but now they’re asking for documents to verify my citizenship…

I have a question… besides the FAFSA, does the school itself give need-based scholarships to students?

Kael- Where do you see the ‘early estimate federal pell grant’? I can’t seem to find it Dx

Btw, Bright Future doesn’t pay for summer, if you didn’t know already…

I’m not sure if we are looking in the same place, but where I see it basically just go to Student Self Service -> Financial Aid -> Student Center -> Look under financial aid section -> view financial aid, then you’ll see click the aid year you wish to view (on mine you can’t click the 2010 one but on my friends you can (weird?), but anyways click the 2011) and you should see everything being offered so far. If this is already what you’ve been looking at then I guess just wait a little and they’ll update it soon, I did my FAFSA for 2010-2011 like Janauary 2nd so it might just be since I did it so early.

Another grant was added on mine last night, an Estimated Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)…I like seeing money being added haha i need it

On my financial aid it says I need verification? I know that means I need to fill out some forms and send them in but, I also read that there’s a deadline and I cannot for the life of me find that. Anyone know?

And on my financial aid it says they are awarding me almost 14,000 dollars estimated. But, I know its like 18,000 to attend…But then they say it will only cost me like…13,098 to attend. Which is wrong but I’m so confused lol

And then I find out that I can get so much grant and scholarship money from USF that I’d have a full ride for a year…and I don’t want to go there. At all. I hate Tampa. But a full ride is awfully tempting. I’d feel like a fool to pass it up, but at the same time I’d be so unhappy there. Any advice?? What would you do in this situation?

A deadline for verification? I might be wrong but I don’t think there’s a deadline for the forms/verification (you can call if you really think you saw some deadline), but you probably just want to send them in as soon as you can. For a lot of the grants, you have to make sure your fafsa is completed by March 1st but besides that, I don’t remember any deadlines.

lol yea its confusing, really the estimated total depends on a lot…first off your tuition will depend on how many hours you’re taking and what they have is based off 14 hours per fall/spring i believe, so if you’re planning on taking less than 14 it will definitely be less. Room & board depends on where you’re staying I think, so if you’re staying in towers thats around 9,000+ for fall spring and summer, but if you’re staying nike/hercules thats around 5,000 for fall and spring. Plus they also factor in transportation and personal expenses…so its not exactly like you’re going to be paying 18,000 exactly…it could be a lot less or it could be more. What your basically paying is tuition (and fees) & housing & books…or at least that is what i’ve understood from everything i’ve read.

And a full ride is definitely awesome, but if you feel like you’re going to be miserable somewhere don’t go…and if ucf is really where you want to be, you know you’ll rather take the ups and down with life at ucf instead of want to complain for four years at usf…plus i think there is still more financial aid to come so you might get enough to almost pay nothing, I’m at 18,000 already because of scholarships and grants.

Lucky you, kael! Did the school itself offer you any need based money? Can you tell me what they’re giving you, so I can have an idea of what I might get? =P And I don’t blame you… you can’t go wrong with free money, lol.

Vnud… definitely go to a school that you wish to go to… I could have gone to UNF and have a full ride there including dorms and everything, but I have no desire to live in Jacksonville for at least the next four years of my life…

Also, what you need to send in is the verification worksheet, if I’ve not mistaken. It can be downloaded from the website. Like kael said, I think the only deadline is sending in the FAFSA by March 1st.

Haha free money is always welcome! But yeah, I’m not sure what you mean? Because isn’t all the grants ucf gives out kind of the school itself giving need based money?

You should probably look out for all the grants: an academic competitiveness grant (got for $750), federal supplemental educational opportunity grant (got for $1200), and of course the federal pell grant (still says estimated but says $5550). Also there’s the Florida Student Assistance Grant and that UCF grant (it hasn’t showed up on mine yet). The SMART grant is something to look out for too (you have to major in a physical, life, or computer science; in engineering; in math; in technology; or in a critical foreign language), but I’m not sure if I’m getting it because I’m majoring in health & public affairs (but I was going to do a pre-aligned course thing which would be based off science so idk, but I may be switching to a chemistry or bio major instead though sooo?). Everything seems to be based off the FAFSA stuff though, I think just the earlier you get it in the faster they tell you your stuff :)

And I guess this afternoon they also put in a “Direct Subsidized Loan - F/Sp” but I’m not really sure I want to take out a loan…

My bad, to get a SMART grant you have to be in your 3rd and 4th year.

I also saw this about summer on the site, “Summer financial aid estimates will be posted on myUCF beginning mid-April after students have registered for summer classes.”

And also “Award notifications are mailed to first time UCF students after March 15th. E-mail award notifications are sent to continuing students.”
So guess we’ll get stuff in our mailbox soon ;)

Lol, disregard my question from earlier please. I totally thought the FAFSA was something separate from what the school gives us. >_<

Thanks for listing those! I guess I’ll find out what I’ll be getting for sure in a few weeks. Hopefully enough to pay for tuition and books, at the very least though! But anyways, how did you add up to 18,000 based on the scholarships/grants that you just listed? And yea, I’ve never considered taking any loans either… I rather work part time and pay my way through.

Really starting to consider doing some essays on fastweb now… =P

I got a $7,500 per year merit scholarship, but I don’t think I got any federal grants =/ I got a loan though. It’s still a lot cheaper than all my other schools.

Oh those were just the grants I listed, I got a $7500 per year scholarship like erical and a $3750 pear year scholarship for this thing at my school. I also applied for this thing called broad prize scholarship ? Have to wait till May to find out about that. I wanted to apply for the left handed scholarship too lol but its onnly for a certain college in Ohio or something. If I have any fees left over, definitley will do work study.

How come you don’t think you got any federal grants erical?

kael92: I went onto myucf and checked my financial aid status and it says “You were not selected for verification” under financial aid status… then I checked what I got and I have the merit scholarship and a loan. The school is still a lot cheaper than all my other schools because I got next to nothing at some of them.

I know a couple of people who still don’t have anything up under the financial aid status except like a loan or something. Being selected for verification is said to be either random or that something might be wrong (like conflicting information), if you don’t get selected I don’t think it automatically mean you’re getting nothing. But you are right, it’s a lot cheaper.

Oh… Dx Do you guys mind sharing your stats? I wonder if I should try to take the ACT again… or are all the merit scholarship money given out already?

I just sent in documents to verify that I’m a US citizen, but I sent it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions when I should’ve sent it to the Financial aid office. Should I send it again or just wait? I don’t want to miss any opportunities for aid…

You should probably send them again because it might take weeks to find your papers and get them to the right people. UCF is a bit slow on the administrative side :/

I don’t know if you were asking in general or a specific person but I got a 28 on my ACT. And I’ve never taken the SATs.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to go to UCF I just wish I could get more aid! And I’ve already gotten my academic scholarship for UCF, so I don’t think I qualify for anything else. But then again, I’m from Florida so…maybe the other one is just an OOS one?

What I REALLY need is a roommate! lol

Yea, I probably should. They usually receive it in like 2 days because I pay express mail and they always update the website, but it didn’t happen this time

I saw your thread and I was considering it, but I don’t think my parents would be too cool with me living in a co-ed apartment Dx

Yeah I understand lol But I can honestly say…Neither one of use would be interested in you like that. We are both gay ■■■■■ If you’re a girl, your parents don’t have to worry about the male since he doesn’t roll that way. And I’m in a happy relationship. So, no worries! If you’re a guy, then well…you’d just have to be ok living with a gay guy LOL

But it sucks because UCF still hasn’t given my friend a decision and my family is forcing me not to wait for him and sign a lease. But I can’t fill the apartment if he doesn’t get in, and Peg Landing wants roommate requests to be final by april 15th which is just around the corner. I’m stuck  I’ll end up being thrown in with random girls, and I would really hate for a roommate to have a problem with my lifestyle. That would be hell in a handbasket for me.
