I’m sorry ArtemisDea So you declined UNC? or the loans?

I tend to get involved in ALOT, lol trust me
I dont even have a lunch period in hs, and I do so many ECs

The loans, not the school (I hope). Since my very generous grandparents are footing the bill, I’d hoped for a tiny grant or something, but I guess I’ll have to wait until next year when our EFC drops. I’m still set on Carolina, though. I already turned down App State’s scholarships, so I’m pretty sure it’ll work out for me.

I finally got my aid! I don’t want to be too specific, but it’s way more than I thought I’d get, and it has only one small loan that I won’t even need. I feel so thankful. My dad was preparing for the worst.

likemythesis, that’s awesome, congrats!

I can’t click on it this morning, maybe that’s a sign they’re putting it up?!?!? =[[

I realllly wanna knoww.

but thats good Artemisdea that you’re still set on the school, though! Sorry about the FA not working out, but yeah maybe next year it will be better.

Still no information on financial aid. I am not actually expecting anything but a response of “none” would be nice to know. Very frustrated with UNC. A bad experience with Explore and less than stellar website and portal is putting doubts in my on how great UNC is suppose to be. We have known for weeks about scholarship, merit $ and financial aid from FSU but nothing from UNC. I hope this is no indication of how poor UNC’s communication is on a regular basis.

I got my financial aid package today, but I don’t know what to think of it or understand it. Can I post it here and have someone explain what I got in layman’s terms? :)

@ AuburnLatina: Yeah, no problem! I can help out! ;)

Thank you so much ArtemisDea! Here it is:

Federal Pell Grant 5,200.00
ACG 1st Year 750.00
Federal Work-Study 2,700.00
Institutional Grant 10,019.00

Academic Year TOTALS 18,669.00

Is this good? And what exactly is an Institutional Grant? :)

I’m not sure what the ACG is, but an Institutional Grant is a GREAT thing! They’re basically giving you 10 grand to come to UNC! (Plus, with the pell grant, that’s 15k you don’t have to pay back) Congrats! That looks like a great package :)

Yay! ACG=Academic Competitiveness Grant. So is this normal financial aid package for a UNC student? Or is this a rare case? 10 grand? Really?

You can ask at the Financial Aid/Scholarships section of CC if you want more precise advice, but I think it looks excellent. (I mean, a grant is a grant is a grant, right?)

I’m not terribly surprised. UNC really has an excellent FA department. Since you qualified for nearly a full pell grant, you might’ve qualified for the Carolina Covenant, which gaurantees (sp) a debt-free education for students with XXXX EFC.

still nothing… =[

I can’t even click on the year noww

Soexcited - we haven’t been able to click on the year since Saturday, and it says that the application is processing. Taking a while to process, I guess! Meanwhile, my daughter is mostly thinking about her two in-state options that she knows she can afford, but it would be nice to be officially narrowed down. If there were to be significant aid at UNC, she would have to rethink everything! Too bad she hasn’t had the last 3 weeks to know whether it’s an option or not.

We have never seen the years to select. All the portal has is “There is no financial aid information found.” Does this mean there is no financial aid?

Completely frustrated with UNC. I know it is supposedly a great school but the portal and communication fall way behind other schools.

Flinty, I am soexcited’s sister and I have had the same problem as you. I havent been able to click on the year since Saturday as well, and we really really need to know!

The problem is new this year and is being caused by a major system upgrade that has been ongoing and has created problems that were not anticipated by anyone. From what I have been told, what began as an attempt to simplify and make things easier and more “user friendly” has turned into a nightmare for UNC admissions and FA.

Please don’t hold it against them…they never expected anything like this and the solution is not solely theirs to rectify; they are even more upset and concerned than you are and extremely frustrated and embarrassed that it has happened.

Thanks for the reminder eadad. It is easy to forget that only the customers feel the frustration of changing to new systems.

i’m getting so frustrated now! I wanna knoww!

Yeah, I’m glad to hear what eadad seems to know about the reasons. I think it might have been a good idea for the office to send kids some sort of explanation so that everyone could know that it’s not just the usual policy to give them so little time before May 1st, and that they are working hard. A little notice on everyone’s portal page would work.
