Financial Aid

I never applied for Financial Aid at NYU.. no FAFSA, nothing. I'm regretting it right now as I realize I really love Stern's business program.

Would it be a good decision to contact NYU's Financial Aid office and see what they will say?

I have an idea of what I would say in my appeal, especially since the idea of why I did not submit the FAFSA was not due to pure laziness. I don't know if listing out my accomplishments and sharing how I've done so well during my senior year will help, but I'd be willing to do so.

I was accepted to Stern with a 4.33 weighted / 3.95 unweighted, 33 ACT. I have numerous leadership volunteer positions and participate in academic clubs.

One of the reasons the FAFSA wasn't filled out is that my dad handles all the financial information. He's very picky about this and won't let anyone see it, especially me. Anyway, so he's been having problems with his hands (carpel tunnel) and it hurt for him to fill out the forms, do anything with the computer, etc. It's not just that his hands have been in pain, but he has had surgeries and cortisone shots as well.

I also did not at first apply to NYU because of my parents. I'm from California and they were against the idea of me going all the way to New York. To say the least, they didn't want me to go there - probably still don't - but they would support me if I chose to go there (if I found the money...). The reason I gave my parents to let me apply to NYU was the "What if I won that scholarship?" This scholarship was to pay for all four years of your education, regardless of what college you go to. I did not win this, but I was talking to my mom about this and why I wanted to apply to a school that cost too much for us financially just in case; to take a chance. She hated the idea and it came to a point where it was my family against I having this talk; basically I was expressing how one had to have hope and you would never know if you didn't try. -Long story, hope you get part of the point of how difficult it was for me to apply. I had to pay for the NYU application fees myself and I tried to get donations from friends for this application fee, haha-

So with all this information (thank you taking your time to help me and read this)...
If I mentioned any of this when I call about Financial aid, do I have any chance for getting some aid?

You can still file for FAFSA, but you might not get as much. Hense, the deadline.

True, I don’t know if I can even file it though. My dad can’t use his hand for 3-4 months… :/

Still give it a shot though. Some people might decline their offer so more money will be up for grabs. Never know until you try : )

Definitely, that’s the same attitude I had when I applied.

I think I’ll call them first and talk to them. I would hate for my dad to go through the pain in filling it out if I can’t get anything out of it.

The FA office is very nice.

I believe legally you are allowed to file these sort of things for him if he is unable. I know a blind woman who’s children are allowed to sign checks and a credit card receipts for her (with consent of course). Call FAFSA though before you do this though, fraud is 20,000 and possibly jail.
