@collegenewbie So how much need did they meet? That seems like an awfully small amount for an EFC of 0. BTW I have an EFC of 0 too so I’m kinda worried now.

my efc is 240…and i got the same aid as collegenewibe.
It’s awfully bad for my family financial situation.

I’m sad that I have to turn a school down for money’s reasons.
I’ll try to bargain tho. If it doesn’t work out, then I guess I have to say Bye Bye to Carnegie (tears )

Our EFC is 25K.
My DS is offered $12.9K in grants, $5500 in Stafford loans, $2800 in WS.
He’s on the waitlist.

Not terrific – better than Berkeley, where he go 0 grants, but not as good as RPI, which offered 21K in grants/scholarship.

Still, we’ll probably let him stay on the waitlist because he really really wants CMU. He’ll definitely have to work this summer and contribute plus work during the school year.

@megmno - You might want to forward the RPI FA info to CMU. While they don’t necessarily match they may adjust some things. Worst they can do is nothing.

@bossr: Thanks, we thought of that, but the problem is that he’s on the waitlist.
I wouldn’t want to hurt his chances of getting off it.
We probably can afford the gap, although DS is definitely going to have to work summers and during the year to help with it.

I think I may have misunderstood the whole concept of CMU reviewing offers from peer institutions. We qualify for no need based financial aid. However, I thought because my son was offered a merit scholarship from a peer institution CMU would review and hopefully provide merit aid. He received zero merit $ and I have been told CMU looks at need based fin aid packages from peer institutions whish we do not qualify for. Anyone know about this? Has anyone who does NOT qualify for need based aid submitted merit offers from other universities and then received merit $? Thanks in advance!

same Q here. Got $0 merit from CMU. Do not qualify for need. Merit offered: $10 from RPI, $20 from CWR and $17 from Rose. IDK if I’ll even appeal CMU. Very disappointed.
We were told by CMU that how much you get from appeal depends on how may have committed with deposits. Looks like they’re hitting their #s.

PS-I have no idea how FAFSA came up w/an EFC that is more than our after tax income. Our reward for being frugal and saving? I guess if we put all of that into a house it might reduce our EFC. Does anyone know if there is a thread on here that explains how EFC is calculated? D will go to college the next year after S goes in the fall and I’ve heard it helps alot if you have 2 in at the same time.

We are in the same situation - 0 financial aid (but are middle class - not rich by any means and live in a very expensive area of the country). We did receive a Merit award from CMU, but less than from the competition. We have sent in an appeal, will post our result.

I hope the appeal process is not just for financial aid, we will find out!
