Find me some safeties? Some reaches? :)

Sorry! I meant to say... "find me some safeties and some GOOD FITS, (not reaches... I have way too many of those!)"

Hi everyone,
I have a few reach schools in mind, but I am having a hard time finding many safety schools and "good fit" schools. Can you think of any? My stats are below. I want to stay relatively near New England/Northeast... I'd go to PA but not much further... I want a school with kind of quirky kids. Maybe I'm weird, but I like nerdy kids! I don't want a huge party school or one with a huge, overwhelming greek life. A somewhat diverse student body would be nice... this doesn't have to be diverse racially, (it could be though) or by major or whatever, just diverse enough that I feel like there is a good mix of people, and everyone doesn't think, act, dress, speak etc. the same way. I think I'd like a larger school, at least medium, maybe like 3000 minimum... (but I would be willing to go smaller if the school fit my other criteria)

GPA
3.826

SAT
CR- 670
M- 680
W- 720
(1350/2070)

ACT
E- 35
M- 31
R- 30
S- 28
C- 31

(I plan to retake both tests)

ECs, Awards, Volunteer stuff, etc:
Golf: co-captain sophomore through senior year
NHS
Several leadership positions around school
SADD member
Lots of volunteer work
Same job since freshman year at a tennis place--I play tennis as well, but my school does not have a team
Internship with insurance company... work for them over the summer
There's more... but I think you get the picture and no need to go too much into detail

Thanks!

Boston U- you could get some solid merit-aid there, and it has a very large and diverse student body
Northeastern U- same as above, hardly any Greek life
NYU- high match/low reach
Penn State- match/high match

What are you planning on studying?

Thanks for responding! I’m not sure yet… but I’m leaning away from math/science and more towards the humanities (english/history)…

Any other suggestions? I really appreciate it.

Boston College- Jesuit, idk if that makes a difference, good for humanities, do NOT go there for science
Brandeis- supposed to be pretty good, I’m not very familiar with it
Tufts- lots of good pre-professional programs
Syracuse
UConn- one of the higher rated publics, insane graduation rate, could probably be used as a safety/low match

Please chance me back! I’m sending a PM. :)

Thanks! I chanced you back… anyone else have any suggestions? Please :)

I’m no so sure about UConn… I’ve heard its very preppy

I’ll chance you back or whatever if you give me some ideas! I am very desperate to find some schools that aren’t preppy/big party/big greek schools that aren’t reaches.

I don’t know larger schools as well, but for the smaller schools that fit the other criteria:

Haverford
Bowdoin
Wesleyan
Vassar
Colby
Conn College
Dickinson
Sarah Lawrence

Thanks! I appreciate your suggestions, guys! Anyone else? Any other schools? I feel like a lot of those are reaches for me, no?

What reach schools are on your list currently?

I second Colby and add Bates and Skidmore. Maybe Ithaca or Bard?

It’s a long list… I need to cut it down, but…
My reaches so far are:
Cornell
UPenn
Colgate
Hamilton
Middlebury
Wesleyan
Tufts
University of Chicago
Vassar
Brandeis
Haverford
Swarthmore
Johns Hopkins

I still need to visit a bunch, and some of those will definitely be weeded out. But those are my prospective REACHES. Now I just need some good fits and some safeties.

Any other suggestions…? I would REALLY appreciate it.  :)

I wouldn’t think NYU would be a reach for you. You have good reaches and should get in some of them. You never know when it comes to those type of schools. You may like Sarah Lawrence, Bard and Bennington for safety schools.

thanks! :)

NYU would be a meet, not a reach but they also don’t have great aid. I have no idea if you need financial aid. If you’re female try Smith - great nerd school for women (DD2 was looking for the same thing). She also liked Oberlin in Ohio. Everything else was farther west.

Thanks, I don’t think my family will be applying for financial aid… and my grandparents left money for college when they died, so cost shouldn’t really be a factor. I am a female… but I really wouldn’t want an all female school. Coed is pretty important to me.

Any other suggestions? These are all very helpful!

bump… Suggestions?

What about Georgetown or GWU? That sounds like they may be a little farther than you want to travel, but they seem to match a lot of the other things you mentioned, like laid-back social life (Georgetown doesn’t have a Greek system), student diversity, etc.

If you want a quirky student body with a laid-back social life and overall good quality of life and excellent academics, apply to Rice. That is what we are known for… our motto is “Unconventional Wisdom.” I know it is very far from the Northeast, but it is an excellent university that seems to be a good fit for you.

Also, look at Brown. They have a quirky student body as well. Brown would be a reach for you though.

i think a 1350 for NYU is a bit low to be honest. i think you would get into the LSP program though.

Alright, I did a little research and came up with Seattle University.

SAT Range: 1050-1270
4300 undergraduates
high student body diversity
strong emphasis on core curriculum (humanities focus)
no fraternaties/sorrorities (Jesuit influence)

It might not be a dream school, but you should take a look. Hope that helps.
