I slept at 12 doing some hw last night, woke up at 7, and unexpectedly awoke with more energy than sleeping at 10 and waking at 7. Seemed to be equivalent or better than sleeping in with 9-11 hours of sleep.

Is 7 the magic #? Or just plain coincidence and somethings out of wack with my circadian rhythm

its kinda like that. the less u sleep, the more energetic u are. unless u consistently get like 5 hours each day then thats gonna be a problem. my friend is weird tho. he gets like 3 hours and hes good. cuz he spends all that time playing starcraft 2.

Random theory - any correlation with how much sleep you got the night before the night before that day? Whenever I pull nearly-all-nighters, it’s always the day after the next day after that when I feel drowsy. (Sorry, don’t know how to word it more concisely)

I think that the day of an all-nighter you have lots of adrenaline pumping through your body to compensate for the lack of sleep, so you don’t necessarily feel tired that day. Once you get home, however, your schedule is a bit messed up, as you need to sleep but it might be too soon to sleep and such. You probably end up not getting the right amount of sleep at the right time, and thus you are tired the next day.

As for the OP’s situation, I think it has to do with biorhythm. When we sleep for like 13 or so hours on the random occasion, we feel pretty crappy when we wake up, which is because the body doesn’t like extreme amounts of sleep. Perhaps for you 9 hours is a bit more than your body wanted, and so you were in a bad mood/tired mood and therefore it seemed as though 9 hours made you more tired than 7.

From what I’ve been told, your body works on a 48-Hour sleep system instead of a 24-hour. So you can pull an all nighter and be fine the next day

I think it was just that you got less sleep than usual, so you were feeling particularly energetic the next day, but if you slept for that short a time every night you wouldn’t keep feeling the same. For example, if I wake up super early to do work every once in a while, I’m so awake. But if I keep doing that over even two or three days, I just hit the snooze button and fall back asleep.
