Against the recommendations of many fine posters on the IU forum, my daughter is taking Finite (M118) this semester, and she needs to get a good grade since she is applying for Business Honors. Does anyone have any general "tips to succeed in Finite"? For A100 people suggested doing as many practice exams as possible. She did that and aced A100. While I know this is a completely different subject, will that strategy work for M118 too? She has Prof McKinley, the head of the math dept., so that seems like it would be a bonus, but the grade distributions don't prove that.

All you can do is practice it a bunch. There is “free” tutoring offered on the third floor of Swain East every Monday-Thursday from 5-7 PM which is very helpful.

The Swain tutoring is very helpful.

I had McKinley and thought he was a great professor. She should be thankful her professor is a native English speaker.

Sit down alone and really focus on doing the Webwork. I think many students just try to ‘get through it’ either by getting answers from other people, or some other means. Honestly, I don’t think the lecture was very helpful. I attribute my success in the course to focusing on Webwork and the recommended practice problems.

This may be due to the fact I rarely made it to lecture, but the finite show (McKinley’s the host) was very helpful. Most were 45-60 minutes long and I felt like did a better job explaining the material than actual class. I also like that it allowed me to pause, fast-forward, or rewind as needed.

I’d say finite is similar to A100 in that practice problems are the way to succeed. The difference though is that lecture attendance is more critical in A100 than M118.

stbemtpynest,

No need to be overly alarmed. If I recall correctly, you D has credits from AP Calc AB. M118 with McKinley should be reasonably easy for her.
