First class of my major sequence closed????

I will be a freshmen in the Fall. I cannot register for classes until orientation which is 7/13/10. The first class "ISE 102" required for the IS major sequence is reported CLOSED. How can this be? I cannot take any other ISE courses until I complete "ISE 102".

The "sample IS course sequence" depicted on the SB website shows I should take this course during my first semester in order to graduate in 4 years.

Are they holding spots in the class for people like me?????

If it is a required initial course for your major, there is likely a seat reserve in effect for freshman who have yet to enroll.

Sometimes classes will reserve 5-15 seats for first year majors, but if it says all the seats are taken and the class is closed, you won’t be able to take it this semester. You have tons of other DECs to take, so most likely you will just take DECs your first semester. Someone will be able to help you at orientation when you make your schedule.

I have the same problem, but I’m a junior. I’m an ISE major as well, and it’s okay to not take it for your first semester. If you can, take ISE 108 or ISE 215 (requires MAT 131 or MAT 127 if you have transfer credits). ISE 102 isn’t detrimental to staying on track with the major. The major sequence that you have to worry about is:

  1. ISE 108
  2. ISE 208 (Requires 108)
  3. ISE 305 (Requires 208)
  4. ISE 308 (Requires 305)
ISE 102 isn’t a prerequisite for many ISE classes. However, it is required to declare it as a major. With this in effect, if you’re an ISE major with a business management emphasis, you won’t be able to take any business classes beyond BUS 111. You only need to take 3 other business classes beyond 111, and there are very few classes with prerequisites beyond 111/112/115 (same class) in the Business department. ISE 102 is also required for ISE 300, which is your upper division writing requirement, but you’ll have plenty of time to take it before then. Here’s my plan for my major, it may help you. Yes, I’m graduating a semester late, but I’m a double major and had trouble fitting in 140 credits into a 4 year program.

Summer 2010 (9 Credits)

If you have any questions about the ISE major and the sequence of classes you need to take, feel free to PM me.

All my planning is down the drain. The classes that I needed to start my major & minor sequences are closed.

I might end up with a crappy schedule. My god

It really isn’t that big of a deal. A LOT of people don’t get to take their major intro class their first semester. You can take it over the winter break or in spring.

Well, what area do you plan on specializing in? There are intro courses that you can take for most of them.

Business & Economics Specialization:
BUS 111 - Intro to Business
ECO 108 - Intro to Economics

Psychology Specialization
PSY 103 - Intro to Psychology

Technological Systems Management Specialization
EST 192/EST 202 - Introduction to Modern Engineering/Introduction to Science, Technology and Social Studies

You also need to take some math classes, depending on what your math placement is.

The Math sequence in the ISE major is:

  1. MAT 126/127 or MAT 131 or MAT 141 or AMS 151
  2. MAT 211 or AMS 210 or AMS 201
  3. AMS 310 or ECO 320

You need to look at the prerequisites for some of the above classes because some have additional requirements. For instance, I think ECO 320 requires ECO 108 first. The most basic sequence (which I have shown above) is:

  1. MAT 131
  2. MAT 211
  3. AMS 310

I want to Specialize in Technological Systems Management

EST 192 is not being offered
EST 202 is CLOSED.

I am bummed out

Then you should take DEC classes. You’ll need Math for the major, so enroll up to what your placement allows for since they’re always offered. With ISE, you won’t have to worry about DEC H as it’s satisfied by EST 325 and DEC C because it’s satisfied by the Math requirement. You need to have 2 DEC E courses to enroll for EST 325, so that’s something that you need to get out of the way for the major sooner rather than later. So, maybe you should try for:

DEC A
Math Requirement (Depends on your Math placement test score)
DEC E
Another DEC
Another DEC

Do you plan on double majoring? ISE can be completed in at least 3 semesters, so you don’t need to rush it. Continually, ISE requires anywhere from 68-71 credits. So, you’ll have a 49-52 credit leeway when it comes to registering for classes. That’s nearly two entire years that you can wait. The only thing that you have to be careful of is the ISE 108, 208, 305 and 308 course progression which requires 4 semesters to complete and the Math sequence which takes 3-4 semesters to complete. Otherwise, there are plenty of ISE electives that you can take that have very little/few requirements on them.

I don’t know if they’re offered, and if they are they’re probably closed, but ISE 312 (Legal, Social, and Ethical Problems in IS) and 340 (Design of Computer Games) can be applied toward your major. ISE 312 is a required class, and 340 can be used as an elective (you need 3 ISE elective classes). Also, if you have U2 status because of AP, CLEP or transfer credit, you can also take ISE 301 (History of Computer), which satisfies the elective component, and ISE 320 (Information Management), which is a required class. There might be a couple other elective classes without prerequisites.

If you can take any CSE or EST classes, it’ll at least help in your understanding of ISE, even if they’re not explicitly required for the major. The same goes for any engineering course.
