Does anyone know of any specific scholarships or scholarship/finaid strategies for first generation college students? It seems that there was a Coca Cola first generation scholarship at one time, but I can't seem to find any current details. S's good friend is so smart and such a nice kid. Parents don't speak English well and could use some help navigating the scholarship maze. Thanks.

I don’t know of any sizable scholarships for “first generation” students.

I would suggest that you find out what the student’s stats are, likely major is, and what the home stats is, and we can recommend some schools that would give him a merit scholarship. The best merit scholarships are from colleges…not from private sources. Private scholarships are often small and only for one year.

So, what is his GPA and ACT and SAT scores (including SAT breakdown)

Many scholarship deadlines are soon, so if you can find out soon, that would be great.

If this student’s stats are high enough, then he may be a good candidate for a schol that meets need.

Are his parents low income with minimal assets?

Thanks. Yes, I think it is a low-income family. He is on scholarship at the high school he attends.

I do not know his score breakdown, but I’ll see if I can find out. My understanding is that his math scores were high (30+ on ACT) but the verbal scores suffered because English is not his first language. We are in Missouri. He is looking at a science or engineering degree, depending on where he can get in.

Even some general advice, like should he contact finaid director and explain his personal situation or will the FAFSA identify the family situation?
