First Interview

Hello all!

I was contacted by an alumni in my area to have an interview.

I never had any sort of interview before so honestly, I'm a bit scared. I never had mock interviews nor do I know what the heck the alumni will ask.

Am I supposed to bring my resume?

Any tip or advice will be helpful!

I had my interview in November (ED) and I got in this past December, so hopefully my experiences will be of use to you.

As opposed to other interviews I had at other colleges, my interview with the Middlebury alum was initially a lot more about recording scores and listing out interests/activities. Basically, my interviewer was trying to see if I would be a good academic and social fit for the school. Once we moved beyond listing out resume-type information, we got into actually talking about the college-parties, homework, the atmosphere, etc- and the interview became less of an evaluation and more of a conversation between people interested in the same thing.

I brought my resume and transcript to the interview, which made discussing my grades and activities a lot quicker; however, you don’t need these things for your interview.

Ultimately, just be relaxed. In the words of my uncle, an interviewer at Harvard, you have no reason to be nervous since you know yourself best.

Absolutely bring a resume and offer it up. You’re making the interviewer’s job easier by giving the alum some talking points. Conversations flow better when you’re not taking a lot of notes.

This is a chance for you to talk about your strengths, interests and to emphasize any “hooks” you may have…all those things you don’t want the admissions officer to forget. Be sure to work the conversation towards these areas while making sure you respond to the interviewer’s inquiry. Speak in paragraphs or at least a few sentences. Listen to and respond to what the interviewer says.

While the principle purpose is to communicate about yourself, be sure to be clear about your interest in MIDD. First, ask for the interviewer’s experience there. If they are significantly older, ask what they’ve heard from people closer to your age who they might know. Then move towards why you are drawn to the school, why you think its the best choice for you.

Ultimately, it seems to me that the question is “Is this candidate a good fit for MIDD, is MIDD the right place for this candidate”

Oh, and dress appropriately. No jeans, no ball gowns. Be interestED, be interestING and be you.

I just had my interview for Middlebury earlier today. We talked about a lot of the things from the CommonApp but from a different perspective. We also discussed things that weren’t on the CommonApp that I might have wanted to talk about.

I agree that the interviewer was trying to evaluate whether you would be a good fit for Middlebury. A lot of what I was asked was about me fitting into the context of the college and what I would contribute, etc. I agree with the above; be interested by asking questions about the college and the interviewer (and his/her experiences); be interesting by discussing interesting aspects of you as a person; be you. You will be fine if you do these things.

I was deferred for RD consideration in ED1, but a couple of weeks ago Midd told me that I was on the list of giving an interview. Till now I still didn’t heard about an interview but apparently you guys already had one. I’m in China, so international applicants will be given Skype interviews later than domestic applicants?

Dufour - not neccessarily a skype interview. I’m international as well, and I’ve been asked to be interviewed by a Middlebury alumini who lives here in the same country as me. Chances are, there will be an alumini in China who will be able to interview you.

Mines today! Fingers crossed!

And good luck on yours later!

Thank you namine! But the officer of Midd did tell me that Chinese applicants will be more likely to be given Skype interviews perhaps because there are so few Midd alum available in China.
Good luck on your interview!

its todayyyyyy sdjflsdjf;s

a bit excited haha

all went well :)

Well done! I got my assignment today.
