I am a senior, and I'm applying early decision to Duke (November 1st deadline) which REQUIRES first quarter (or marking period) grades to be sumbitted, which are then counted towards admissions.

My question is, how much impact do first quarter grades have towards admissions? If I have, say two B's (both in AP courses), and all other A's, will those two B's lower my chances? Or are the first quarter grades largely negligible?

Just guessing here, Alex – but I think they count as much as any other quarter’s grades on your transcript, possibly a bit more since they’re the most recent. So – if everything else is in order, my guess is that it’s a negative, but it shouldn’t be a killer.

(There are very few perfect applications, though, so don’t sweat it too much.)

Wait…first quarter as in Senior grades until winter break? Why would they matter if Early decision results come back December 15 and the latest grades the transcript has that you send in November is from Junior year?
