I already wrote another essay that would be perfect for CALS but I want to do CAS as my first choice and CALS for my alternate. Would this matter, if say, my CALS essay turns out to be the stronger of the two?

Or should I just put CALS as my first choice and then just switch from CALS to CAS once I get in.

Or does all this matter at all, since i'm doing pre-med and CALS has a program for that.

The undergraduate colleges have different admissions offices. Your primary school will read your primary essay and they MIGHT read your alternate. And if they think that you are not right for them but possibly for your alternate, then they send your application to the alternate's office for review.

Don't just put CALS as your first choice unless it is. Colleges are getting pretty good at realizing people applying to a school that's not their top choice. The fact that your alternate essay is stronger shouldn't hurt you for your primary admissions. Also, internal transfer is not exactly easy.

None of the schools have pre-med programs. Being pre-med is just a classification that means you're taking the required science classes needed to get into med school - you can be any major and be pre-med.

Well, to be honest, I don't really know the difference between CALS and CAS besides the fact that CALS is more for agriculture and sciences related to management? And that CAS is more general--it's like all the arts, sciences, etc.

Therefore, I'm actually not very sure which college is my "first" choice. Like I said, I want to go into the medical field, but that's really broad, and since there's no "pre-med" program, it is really open-ended.

I'm just wondering which school I would have a higher chance of getting in? I'm doing either biology for CALS or chem/bio for CAS.

What are some of the differences between the two in general?

Background (Okay yea i know some of this stuff isn't really relevant :))
-Asian Female/immigrant
-2260 SAT
-did significant summer research in a neuroscience lab
-Red Cross recording secretary
-Asian American Donors Program worker (bone marrow drives, etc)

Anyways, I already wrote about my research experience and it's polished. Which college should I make my first choice though? I seriously need help with this part...

I'd go for CALS. Your science based research shows that you're know what you want to do in the pre-med field. CALS likes to see EC's based off of what you want to study in college. If you have a lot of sciencey EC's, I'd apply to CALS.

CAS accepts a lot of undecided people into their college. CALS has a lot of science related course requirements whereas CAS doesn't. Objectively, CALS has a higher acceptance rate but as cc102 said, bio-majors as a pre-med are extremely competitive.

CALS doesn't have a straight chemistry major, only CAS has it. In CALS, you could do a Biology major with a biochemistry concentration....but Biology is one of CALS' most competitive majors.

And yes...adcoms can tell if an applicant is not a good fit for the college.

Wait, it matters which major you pick within CAS and CALS?

I thought it was just that there are just a lot of bio majors in general. Okay i'm just going to apply to CAS for chemistry. That's what I wanted to do anyway.
