First Semester as a Freshman

he’s not prem iirc…

Wait. Grad Schools, all Grad Schools do realize that a 4.0 at Cal means a lot more than a 4.0 at UCR right?

They take it into account, but only marginally. Med schools will only give you the benefit of the doubt if you and another applicant have the same GPA, but the other person graduate from SDSU or something. And this depends on the GPA range too. If you both have 2.0’s, then it’s not going to help you anyway.

Relax - get used to it. Your GPA at Berkeley will be lower than your GPA at high school.

Consider everyone else who was admitted and what their high school GPAs look like. You’ll see that basically everyone is from the top of their class, with impeccable GPAs. If your GPA remained the same as it was in high school, then the average GPA would be ridiculously high.

In any case, freshman GPAs generally tend to be much lower than the GPA you will graduate with. Also, 3.5 is not bad. For example, I’m an EECS student, and I started off with 3.333 my first semester. Things are still going fine for me, since I know few people with higher GPAs, but many more with much lower.

The fact that your degree says UC Berkeley is usually enough. Try your best, but I’d say a 3.5 your freshman year is similar to getting a 3.9 unweighted GPA in high school.

what kind of gpa do i need for med school?

hmm wow. very nice. not many paleontologists i know of.

What med schools do you want to get into?

i’d say 3.7-3.8 to be competitive at any medical school, 3.9+ to be competitive at top schools.
competition for CA med schools is unkind to CA residents. it’s hard to find backups that even accept OOS students at reasonable rates.

damn, i didn’t know GPAs for med school were so high

is berkeley’s intense grade deflation taken into consideration when applying to grad school? or does it not really matter?

um, a 3.25 average campus GPA certainly should not qualify as “intense grade deflation”

what about the easiest med school…

how about optometry or pharmacy? are they a little lower?

and are you talking about pre-req grades or… overall. :(

I think the statistic is about 50% of applicants get into A medical school.

For optometry, the average ranges from 3.3-3.6 a couple years back, though of course, you should always aim for slightly higher - probably 3.5-3.7 range. Berkeley’s Optometry school is really difficult to get into - especially since it requires a lot of prereq lab courses, like anatomy, physiology, etc. Therefore, I highly recommend pre-optometry students to be IB majors to get into courses like IB131L, 132L. Because of budget cuts, lab sections have been restricted almost entirely to IB majors.

I’m referring to overall GPAs for both medical & optometry school. According to UCSD skagg’s website, avg overall GPA was 3.66 for those interviewed the last few years, so range of 3.6-3.8 is about right for the top schools. Probably 3.5-3.7 should be good for some of the lower ones.

oh boy. im a 2nd year. i think i should change majors. no way im gonna get to that gpa.

poli friggen sci for the win.
