First year dorms -- do I stand a chance?

looking for cleanliness and spacious single room

do I stand a chance?? no?

John Jay has mostly single rooms, so in that aspect you may be fine.

I don’t know about spacious. They seem okay in the picture.

Check out the virtual tour. I was surprised by how spacious the doubles in Carman looked.

[Housing : John Jay](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/housing/docs/residence-halls/jay/index.html)

I went on an overnight visit, and I’ll just say that John Jay certainly isn’t a palace, it’s a dormitory. But all but like two rooms per floor are singles, and they’re not terribly small.

The singles are going to be small, but if you want privacy that’s the trade of.

99% of freshman get either their first or second choices.

Most of the rooms in John Jay are reasonably spacious- you get the standard issue desk + dresser, a closet, a bed. If you think of a vertical rectangle, if the bed’s on the left or right side and the dresser/desk are across from it, then you’ve got 3-4 feet in between (enough to walk through to the window). For one person who isn’t bringing a ton of stuff, it’s a pretty good place to live. Just be aware that floor bathrooms can be pretty disgusting on the weekends while people are getting the partying out of their systems in the first semester.

As long as you don’t request Furnald you’re pretty much guaranteed your first choice dorm.

John Jay is a great dormitory. There is plenty of space for one person, and the few doubles have even more space per person. Everyone is shocked when they get here how small the rooms are, but I haven’t heard anyone complain since NSOP week. There is more than enough space to have a small get-together with people and store all of your stuff. John Jay is also probably the nicest freshman dorm besides Furnald, but I would just warn against Furnald for the average person.

what’s bad about furnald?

The social atmosphere is suppose to be the most anti-social. I don’t speak from experience, but that is the predominate word on the street. A social atmosphere is critical freshman year for most people.

I don’t live in Furnald, but it seems pretty boss. Don’t worry about the “social atmosphere”; I have plenty of friends from Furnald who only go back to their rooms to sleep. Furnald people can always hang out in Carman/JJ and have a great place to go back to when they are done (I envy those who use the Furnald handicapped showers).
