First Year Student @ UCR, Ask me anything...

When I was applying and getting ready to go to UCR I had so many questions. If you have any questions about the school, social scene, ANYTHING, go ahead and ask away

what can we expect in ochem classes, discussions, and labs?
I have no idea what to expect and im scared.
Is it just like general chem where we go to lectures to take notes, take quizzes in discussion, and follow instructions from the chem lab manual to make compounds?

How is bioengineering there? And what do ppl do in spare time?

lol. fail.

sorry, i would help the two people who asked questions, but im a business major.

I’d say bioengineering is really tough because you have to take a lot of bio, chem, physics, and math courses. When you go to upper division, it’ll be a lot tougher than you think. Here is the course plan for bioengineering: http://student.engr.ucr.edu/majors/BIEN%202010.pdf</a>
One of the benefits of majoring in bioengineering is that if you go through all these courses with a decent gpa, you’ll have better chance to get into good med school than any other majors. If you’re not thinking about going to med school, you’ll be able to find a research position after graduating.

Curious about class size, especially for first year students. Are all of the classes very large, ie 200-300 students, and taught by TAs? When you get to junior and senior year, does the class size get smaller?

For most of the breadth classes and popular first year classes, the class size can definitely get in the hundreds. My Anthropology class, for example, had about 500 people enrolled (though you’ll never see more than 500), though far fewer than that actually come to class. Also, as far as I know, all classes are taught by professors, with the discussion sections being led by TAs (honors classes have professors lead the discussions and summer classes are often taught by TAs). Now classes do get smaller as you start taking more obscure and upper division classes. My Linear Algebra class, an upper division class which is required for all math majors and often has plenty of engineering and physics students as well, has about 50-60 students. My Geometry class on the other hand, which is upper division and only required for a handful of math majors, has around 17 people.

large classes are always taught by professors OR lecturers. Lecturers are pretty much just as good as professors, although they don’t have as many credentials and don’t do research.

and as the previous poster stated, discussions and labs are led by TAs.

for some classes, there is an honors section, which is the same lecture, but the discussion is also led by the professor, rather than by a TA. spaces in those classes are very limited however.

there are some small classes taught by grad students. my english class of about 25 people is taught by a grad student.

and upper div are sometimes, but not always smaller, and more obscure classes and many seminars are smaller.

how are the accounting classes?

im an accounting major, would you recommend this school to me?

im a business major, but im a first year so i havent declared a concentration or taken many major specific classes yet, but riverside has an awesome business. its the biggest of all the UCs and the best in the inland empire.

so i copy pasted this from another “ask me anything about ucr” kind of thread just so i can get as much information as possible.

first of all thanks for doing this
i already asked this question but il do it again to get more input :stuck_out_tongue:
how fast does Pentland fill up?

how does the housing contract work, do i have send in my SIR before i fill out the housing contract?

Which meal plan would you suggest? i will most likely not be cooking and it would be too far from home to get food (makes me sad :()

What year can i get a single room?

How is the engineering department (i want a students opinion not one from online or the school website since that isn’t “accurate” since they are advertising it)

More specifically how is the electrical engineering department?

Do classes fill up fast?

How’s calc 2, calc 3, and higher physics classes?

I want to do lots of research and internship starting freshmen year, is it hard to get these?

Overall how would u describe the environment (outside and inside) the campus, the student body, professors, and the school it self (as in building structures, equipment, etc).

Last question for now why the heck did they send me a poster in the mail…i mean i like the thought but my mom and I thought it was going to be important papers for admissions and rushed to the post office (she had to leave work early). i personally dont see the need for it but yea…

Thanks Again for answering all these questions and i know its a lot but just needed to get to know before i decide which school i will go to.

hows the business major? is it better than SJSU’s? (thats what ive heard). And any advice u could give to suceed? :D
