Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I think this is a very high stress time for many folks. I know you are anxious about the return to your office, too, @ClassicMom98 . I read recently that there are a lot of unexplained rashes and also skin breakouts which some docs are attributing to “COVID stress.” 7 pounds is a LOT to lose during a run. I really recommend Nuun tablets as a recovery and daily drink (you add them to water). There are different formulas and flavors- all of which are good. I’ve been using the Immunity one lately and drop half a tablet into my slightly fizzy water.

I got 90 minutes of biking in, even with the heat and humidity.

I have not been sleeping well lately either. I simply can’t fall asleep, but I don’t “feel” anxious or stressed. It’s very frustrating. I’ve had multiple nights this week where I didn’t fall to sleep until after 4 am. ARGHH!

A 5 miler today, but does it count if I forgot to turn my Garmin back on at the stoplight? (only 4.6 in the GPS record - grrrr)

Off to PT for my frozen shoulder. Hopefully, I be able to start adding pull-ups soon.

@sushiritto I only drink water and Diet Coke. I like to eat my calories. How much of which beverage has fluctuated over the years - with no effect.

@MomofWildChild I may try some of those tablets at some point. I don’t run that far anymore though, so that helps the most!

High 80’s here, but not much humidity (34%).

Started off with deadlifts and achieving a 3-rep max for the day. Some people are great deadlifters and then there’s me. Not one of best lifts for sure, maybe my worst lift. But I keep plugging away.

Then in intervals, with equal rest periods, 50 Devils Presses, which are burpees with DB’s that you snatch on the way up from the floor. Next was 6 minutes of thrusters and the assault bike. And finally, the last 9 minutes of DB deadlifts and overhead lunges. Oh, and 3 sets of ring dips, transitioning into L-sits for core work.

@bluebayou, good luck with the PT for frozen shoulder.
My advice is to push yourself, and do the exercises every day. I had it, and I made a near full recovery. After a couple of sessions I only went to PT every 2 weeks, but I did the exercises every day, and they were somewhat painful for quite some time. I had it a couple of years ago, and I still do some of the exercises they told me to do regularly. (Well, I did more when the gym was open- so this is a good reminder I should do them now too).

Re: deadlifts

I was listening to a podcast about older lifters and the coach was saying sometimes the deadlift is the only Barbell lift an older person can do!

Say you’re 84, crunchy shoulders, which makes all the other main lifts (bench, press, squat) difficult.

The coach said they can almost always get an elderly client to deadlift, even if they have to start with a 15# training bar.

And deadlifting results in huge QOL improvements, especially for the elderly who have lost muscle mass.

I started one of those vitual walk/run challenges. It’s a Camino Walk , one which I did in real time with my older daughter, who studied in Spain. My younger D thought it was stupid to pay money for the app, but I felt like it would work for me. I can track my route and it’s easy to use . It was also the first time I got motivated to walk more.

Great idea, whatever it takes to get moving. 'Grats.

@bluebayou - A few years ago I had a very sore shoulder for months, I think due to an overly vigorous pruning session with very heavy shears (so not frozen shoulder… but not sure what was injured). I could not even put on a coat unless I put the “bad” shoulder/arm in first. No matter how much I rested it, the pain persists. Evetually I decided to go to exercise classes anyway, just skipping thing, like hover, that I could not do. Finally the shoulder started to improve. I later decided that the extra circulation from exercsising helped me (?)

^^thanks c-mom.

I injured my shoulder when working out last June. It was months before I could even put my arm behind my back with a towel to dry off after a shower. Figured the shoulder would never fix itself, so thought I’d give PT a try. Had a few sessions in March, and then everything shut down here, and I relapsed.

As 1214 mom’s experience, PT has been amazing. I hate, hate, hate the exercises, but it seems to be working… Still have a lot of stiffness in the capsule, but starting to get close to be able to actually lay my arm flat on the floor. Baby steps, I’ll take it!

Count me in as another one who is miserable in hot, humid weather! We have have a cool spring here in Northern VA - and I love it. The last few days however it has gotten very hot and humid.

I ran 3.5 in 90% humidity this morning. I was surprised/pleased with my pace. I have been running more often and longer runs lately and my endurance is building.

As for falls, I have had 4 in the last 4 years. Skinned knees and rolled ankles mostly. Three were while running (including the one 2 1/2 weeks ago) and one while walking. I am 63 , but honestly don’t think this is due to aging. I did this a lot as a kid (my family made fun of me about it) and several when I was younger. I just periodically lose my balance. I do have a regular yoga practice and think I would be worse if I didn’t.

Got 2 hours of biking in before the rain.
Will do weights a little later. It’s been a good week for me.

I tend to have a running fall about once a year. I HATE falling. Last fall (the season) I fell on my treadmill. Somehow caught my toe right in the beginning of my run and landed on the belt- which is like sandpaper. I straddled the belt, but had to put myself back on it to get spit off the back. I badly scraped my knees (deeply) and shins. I didn’t realize how bad it was, finished the run, then went upstairs and assessed the carnage. I have a very low foot pickup and tend to drag the left forefoot.

My worst falls were 2 years ago when I fell in 2 separate airports on the same day due to some very grippy soles (a manufacturing defect, in my opinion) on some Birkenstock boots. I actually cracked some ribs and hit my head- my compute backpack caused me to slam to the tile floor. Embarrassing and painful. My work made me file a workers comp claim which paid for the xrays… Zappos gave me my money back…

4,2 VERY humid miles this morning. That’s it for today.

I’ve got upper body on the training log today.

Last night, took a prescription anti-inflammatory in an effort to get my joints & connective tissues to chill. I slept well!

On deck for tonight, heading up to WI for a small backyard cocktail & appetizer party with some ex-coworkers.

Seriously cannot wait! <—- said the introvert!

Starved for some funny stories with that motley crew!

Popping in to report a chin-up PR!

3 sets of 4 unassisted.

Thank you, deadlifts!

@MomofWildChild - My reference to a virtual half marathon was pretty loose; it’s not an official race, just a friend and I agreeing to run 13.1 miles on July 25th and have a Zoom breakfast together afterwards. I love meeting for breakfast after a race … and that’s as close as I’m going to get in a while.

I second the Nuun tablet recommendation. I am not good at all about fluids, at least in part driven by my not liking plain water. The Nuun makes it much easier, and I feel good about drinking it especially after hot weather runs.

The humid is no fun but I’ll still take it over winter wind chill!
