Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

So, I got an email from the Spartan Race people regarding eating protein before bed:

https://life.spartan.com/post/protein-before-bed?utm_source=yesmail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=unbreakabledaily_20200622&utm_term=brand&utm_content=daily

And then I googled the subject. And I found an NIH article on the subject:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6415027/#:~:text=Overall%2C%20the%20existing%20studies%20suggest,synthesis%20rates%20during%20overnight%20sleep.

This is new news to me. I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t eat anything after say 8:00 PM (dinner). But I’m always hungry when bedtime is approaching. SO, I often have a healthy snack, which often includes a little protein and/or fruit. And my weight is relatively constant.

Conclusion:

Again, I wasn’t aware of this research before. Just thought it might of interest here.

I have, shockingly to me, trained myself during this pandemic stuff to NOT eat after my 7 or 7:30 dinner finish (sometimes 8). I used to always have some sort of snack- and not a healthy one usually- at about 9:00 during TV. My husband continues to graze at night.

We eat late around 8:00 PM-ish. So, around 9:30-10:00 PM, typically, I’ll have a piece of watermelon, cutie or two, some cherries, etc. Not every single one, but a portion. Occasionally, I’ll have a little leftover protein that we have in the fridge, like chicken or salmon.

I always feel very guilty about it, but maybe this research changes my mind. I’m not sure. If I was gaining weight, then I’d be concerned.

Checking in. Run this morning was eh - muggy and no oxygen. It could have been worse, I suppose. Video was chest, shoulders, and tris (P90X). I didn’t feel particularly strong. My attempts at 1 arm push-ups were pathetic. Boo. But I got 15 clapping ones. Yay.

Trying not to have anxiety attacks is my goal for the foreseeable future. As I suspected, our state is doing “great” and will likely open up to Phase 3 shortly. However, my city is always behind the times. Our cases have been climbing the last 10 days. So even though we aren’t doing well, we will follow state orders. And I work in a building with ~10% mask compliance amongst employees outside of their office space. Ugh. If I get sick because I made a bad decision, I wouldn’t be happy about it, but I could only blame myself. If I get sick because work makes me be here when I’ve proven I get just as much done at home, well… I don’t know if I will ever be able to forgive them. I still have 7 more years before I can leave and I am the primary breadwinner and insurance carrier. And my head just gets stuck in that cycle…

I always eat a snack right before bed. I don’t worry about it. It’s the waking up in the middle of the night and eating through the kitchen that gets me in trouble.

@ClassicMom98 I can’t give you legal advice, but I am pretty sure you could get a doctor’s note about this situation and your anxiety which means that your employer would have to offer you the reasonable accommodation of working from home- since you have shown that it works! A compromise would be that you come in for important meetings IF everyone wears the masks. I’m on meetings all week long where other companies are reporting on employees such as yourself who are not comfortable back in the workplace and accommodations are being made.

I managed to get in over 90 minutes of biking early today, before it got too hot or rained.
Plus I did some weights and a little stretching.

Interesting about the protein snack before bed. We eat early, (moved the 6:30 dinnertime up to 6 now that I no longer commute) and I try to not eat at all after that. I have reflux issues so eating anything before bedtime can cause problems.

Interesting about the protein, indeed! I always thought protein was the worst thing to eat right before bedtime because it can take a long time to digest, but apparently not.

Hugs to @ClassicMom98 on the passing of your loved cat as seen on the Say It thread. <3

2.3 mile run before the rain this morning and then ran downstairs to finish off my 6 month cycling goal for 4 miles. Two more goals I’m close to meeting before July 1st! By the time I got done cycling it was pouring so I guess I timed things right.

So sorry about your kitty @ClassicMom98 .

4.5 miles which did not go nearly as well as yesterday’s miles. The humidity got to me and it was a struggle. But- I made it. My husband is out on a long bike ride with his bike group. I hope the rain doesn’t come back.

So sorry about your kitty @ClassicMom98.

We are going to hit 80 degrees today. Yikes. Glad we have a basement! Husband is going to meet a collaborator after work (funny how business meetings can be held in a park at a 6 foot distance!), and I will just do something in the home gym. I had to scout the web for a new set of dumbbells because mine was depleted by the kids, and finally Amazon says they will be shipped by the end of the month!

Thanks all. This isn’t my best week for sure. Workout was minimal. I woke up and I knew Hokie needed to go to her final vet visit. She was very old, had dementia, and very frail, but still hanging in there. She jumped up on the recliner just last night, but this morning she couldn’t move her legs. She made it clear she didn’t want to be held/touched and the vet didn’t open until 7am, so I went for a walk. I came back and we put her in the cat carrier. We went to find a box and she passed away in the cat carrier in my living room. Not a good morning. That makes 3 animals in the past year. 2 were ours and old. The 3rd was the stray that H took care of on our porch, but was too feral to bring inside. He was hit by a car. Please no more for awhile. (We have 3 more cats aged 6-9.5)

I’m sorry about Hokie @ClassicMom98 .

So sorry @ClassicMom98. We just went through something similar last December.

I got my 4+ miles walking in after work. It was very warm out and we cut it a little short due to lightening.

So sorrY @ClassicMom98. It’s so hard to lose furry friends.

More normal day today (so far). Gross and nasty run, but it is now complete. My video was Back and Bis (P90X). It was OK. Pull-ups are still weak, but everything else felt OK.

Now that I’m back at work, I seem to be tucking my feet behind my chair rung for long stretches. When I get up, my hamstring is super tight. I’ve always struggled with getting up and taking breaks, but even moreso now. I don’t like leaving my little cubbie space into common areas. OTOH - a bright spot in my work life. For the first time in 5 years, I am excited about what I have on my plate. I love GIS projects and this cemetery one is fun. Working on it in my spare time at the beginning/end of each day makes the day fly by.

I think working from home has been better for my moving around and not sitting in the same position. Even with my standing desk at work (which I had gotten lax about using), I could stay plopped in the chair until Apple watch made me move!

4.5 not very good miles this morning, but they are miles and they were outside. I’ve reached Chattanooga in my journey across TN. About to turn northeast on the course. One of my co-workers finished yesterday! He had run a couple of solo marathons to get there. I’ve predicted to finish about August 6, which gives me some wiggle room since I have until August 31. I’m in the top 1/3 of the field of 19,000, which is pretty good!

I see the NYC Marathon has been cancelled. That is my “dream race” - if I ever ran a marathon I would want to run that one. So sad for everyone who was planning to run, but totally agree with the decision. I still have some races I hope to run this fall/winter, but not sure they will happen.

4 miles this morning. It was a bit cooler and less humid (it’s teasing us) so I saw a lot more runners and walkers out this morning.

@ClassicMom98 It’s always so sad to hear that a pet has died. :disappointed:

Catching up here. Monday was squats and snatches for strength. The HIIT was 17 minutes of pull-ups, squats, rowing and sit-ups. Core work was 3 set combo of carrying a weighted yoke and toes to bar.

Yesterday was handstand push-ups for skill and strength. And I can’t remember when these felt really good for me, since it’s not one of my better movements. But yesterday was amazing. They felt great! Easy up and great extension of the arms. I was very happy with them.

Again, like the other day, when I spent time helping someone who wanted to learn muscle-ups, one of the young (age 19) powerlifter guys that works in the gym got interested in handstand push-ups while I was doing mine. I tried to instruct him and he made one attempt. He didn’t do very well.

I also did a 3-set combo or glute ham raises and weighted OH lunges and then finished up with a quick (for me) 2,000m row.

I’m trying to ease or “limp” into my scheduled day off Thursday, since I haven’t had a day off in what seems like a very long time. I want to stay on schedule, so the plan is to get back to the gym today for more “fun and games.”

Great feeling! Congrats!
