Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I posted that last Saturday that the top set for deadlifts (PR) felt very heavy.

Sunday, I did quite a lot of yard work, trimming trees, removing 2 diseased mature burning bushes, dragging limbs to the parkway…and my back was just SO TIRED.

I slept and ate like a champ. Tuesday I managed a Press PR at 74# for a triple and a 2 + F. Back-off sets were fine, but a lot of work. Volume bench was fine. No time for LTEs.

Today? I did the LTEs. And then I wasn’t sure what to do for squats and deadlifts. Skip? Deload? I opted for taking 20# off both.

I did five sets of 3 for squats at 150# and then 3 sets of 5 for deads at 180#. Legs and back didn’t hurt, and I managed the lifts with good form, but boy oh boy, everything felt TIRED and running on empty.

I might deload lower body again on Saturday and try to get some more recovery in.

I planned to have a long bike ride with a friend starting at 3, but it turns out the place we were riding closed at 4, despite their website saying the visitor center closed at 4:30 but the grounds were open til dusk.
So, we rode for about 50 minutes, to make sure we made it.
Then I came home and rode for another hour, and pulled some weeds.
I did some weights earlier today, so I’m feeling pretty good.
I have my bike on my car and we are hoping to do the longer ride tomorrow after I leave work, assuming I can get out by noon or so.

I wonder when running races will start back up. I noticed that our local running group announced some group runs starting back up today. But another race that was surprised to see a week ago shown as happening (it was a three event race for women only one of which was a 5k - the others bike or bike/swim) is now cancelled - at least the 5k part. It was suppose to take place July 11 and I was considering doing it just for fun because I’ve heard it’s fun!

@FallGirl would you ever consider the NYC 1/2? That one is in the spring and is one of my brother’s favorite races- ends at Coney Island I believe.

5k run this morning on my own.

I don’t know of any races that are actually happening other than very small trail races. I know of some scheduled for November, but I’m not optimistic.

4.3 humid miles. Very sweaty! Really like the NB Beacon shoes. They nailed that Fresh Foam cushioning.

Believe it or not, there is a road race on the 4th of July in a city near me. They are capping the numbers ~200 and running them in 50 person waves and supposedly no spectators. Still, a big no way from me. The course is a paved trail, probably 12-14’ wide. It doesn’t take much for me to chicken out of a race, so a pandemic makes them quite easy to avoid. Maybe someday down the road. Older S is moving to Nova, so maybe if this is all over, I might try one up there. I used to like to race up there, especially the DC road runners series. $5 for non-members. No shirt, no hoopla. A measured course, a group of people, a clock, and someone to say go. I believe most of the time, you’d tell the results person your time at the end. Good enough for me.

My run was a teensy bit better today. I’d give it a 4/10 stars. This time of year, it won’t get much better. I’m thankful I can run at all. And then it was yoga day. I get down because I’m so immobile, even more so than I remember at the studio. but I remind myself at the studio, I did not run first. It makes a difference. (I hope!)

Yesterday was a bench press and deadlift day. No CF just straight powerlifting. My numbers were very good. I got pretty close to PR levels and then did a back-off set or two. And then I finished up with a 2-mile treadmill run.

Today is a complete rest day other than a long walk or two. My body is beat. Soreness everywhere.

And thank goodness I’m getting my first haircut in 3 months today! Say goodbye to the “Guns N’ Roses” look.

@sushiritto

Hopefully you don’t lose your strength with the hair cut Samson!

I wish we had a picture!

We went for a walk last night and were unpleasantly surprised that the patch of grass and the sand volleyball court at the park were jam packed with youngsters. Not a mask in sight! Lots of semi-naked butts though. School is out! Mr. called this spot “Covidistan” and we walked around that area. At the end of the street above, teens sat in their cars eating takeout and watching the sunset. It was a much safer setup for socializing. Saw a muscular dude loading a bunch of impressive-looking dumbbells (50 lb, anyone?!) into his car… looked like he was a personal trainer visiting a client at that house! The trail was peaceful and empty.

Glad you got away from Covidistan! Are you sure that wasn’t @sushiritto with the dumbbells?

Pretty positive! The dude had a freshly shaven head.

I rode 24 miles today, including about 3 very wet ones at the end.
But, we made it to our cars before the thunder and lightening started.

A strange thing happened this morning.

I was walking our old cairn terrier mix down a neighborhood side street. He stopped to poop. I was absent-mindedly admiring some hostas, when all of a sudden, I see there is a full grown deer (doe) standing a few feet away!

She was in full protection mode and making short charges at the dog. The dog was not even barking! I kept stepping in between the doe and the dog, while trying to walk away from the doe. I wasn’t sure when her bluff might turn into a kick.

It didn’t take long before I gave up and marched right up to some strangers front door and leaned on the door bell!

He answered quickly, immediately sized up the situation & let us in!

He told me the doe has been chasing people, especially dog walkers, because she has a fawn tucked away in the back yard of a house across the street.

!!!

@Midwest67 oh wow! I’m glad the man answered his door. I have not seen that before! I’ve been startled/scared by their grunting noises before, but nothing like that!

Same old stuff here. Run was eh. Legs were tired, but I had a negative split on the return, even with the big hill. Then the Legs and Back video. Pull-ups are still lagging, but the chin-ups are strong. Usually it’s the other way around. While my legs are tired running, I can tell they’ve gotten a lot stronger from The Work program. I was a lot better at the leg exercises. I got deeper into the squats and balance work, and I was not dying as much as usual.

SIL/BIL are still really sick, but not hospitalized. (In-laws seem to be good OTOH!) But it will be 2 weeks on Saturday for SIL. I am a really grouchy patient if I’m sick for 3 days. I can’t imagine 2+ weeks. And we have almost doubled our # of cases in the last 2 weeks. I am not thrilled with this development.

@ClassicMom98

I hope your SIL & BIL continue without complications!

I was lucky when I was sick with C19. I just wanted to sleep and sleep and sleep. None of the fever, chills, headaches or muscle pain H had.

How is your anxiety with being back at work?

Wow @Midwest67 That is scary! I’m glad the guy let you in!

I can’t imagine doing leg exercises or much of anything else after running, so hats off to you @ClassicMom98 !

4.5 miles for me and I was more strict with the low HR protocol and, as a result, was slower and felt better at the end. Tomorrow is my longer run so I didn’t want to tire myself out today. The Sahara cloud is trying to get here, which should impact breathing a little bit. We have the edge of it now.

So sorry about the illness in your family @ClassicMom98

@MomofWildChild It sounds like you are getting more used to the low HR runs? I have tried doing some low HR work but it is sure difficult to get used to. Yesterday though I did 35 minutes on the rowing machine without going over the limit and it was way better than the previous attempts which required a lot of stops to let the rate fall. I started reading about doing low HR work and it sounds like it makes sense; I keep saying I want to improve my endurance and I keep hearing long and slow is the way to go…but I had no idea it would be so hard to go that slow!

@orangepurple I’ve had good luck with low HR training in the past. It is much easier if the weather is cooler and there are no hills! I run every day and right now I’m “over-running” so I can get across Tennessee in my virtual race. Low HR is the best way for me to hold up as far as fatigue and, hopefully, not get injured. I also was coming back from a small stress fracture that took me out of February and March, so it made sense. It is VERY hard to stick to it, and I’ve been up and down with it this spring. At my age and mileage level (35-40 miles a week), it makes a lot of sense. It also makes me very slow and the runs take longer…

@Midwest67 I’ve done much better as the week goes on. But it does seem like there are good days/bad days with the social distancing in my office. This week was pretty good until this morning. A co-worker who used to work across the hall came in. He used to sit and chit chat for hours all the time. Then, he got a job upstairs and rarely come in. He came in today and started chit chatting to the guy across from me - maskless and sniffling. Probably allergies, but still. Ugh. He is the type of person who uses his deceased mom’s handicapped placard to park closer to the building when there’s nothing wrong with him, but I digress. I shooed him away and he went and chit chatted with the people in the cubbies next to me. After 10-15 min I just left and went outside and sat for 45 minutes. I wasn’t anxious, more annoyed. But I also just didn’t care. I sat and played on my phone and stretched. I did watch the construction across the street that’s supposed to be coordinating with one of my upcoming projects, so I can loosely say that was work, right?
