Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I also suspect that I will be cutting down on my daily exercise duration as I head back to work largely full time next week. I’ve been averaging 5 miles a day of run, walk or bike - usually in 2 daily sessions - all through COVID. I won’t be able to keep that up unless ALL I do is exercise and work! It’s a bit of a bummer but also I can get really caught up in what I think I “must” do - like I “must” do a morning and evening exercise session - mentally that can both build me up at times - but also bring stress and/or guilt that I should be doing other home tasks.

4.6 sweaty, humid miles this morning. And so another week begins. Short work week- supposedly. We shall see. Just today and tomorrow for June miles. And the trudge across Tennessee continues!

I worked for a couple of hours this morning, but I’m home now waiting for a painter to come put the final touches on a job that started in March (we asked him to wait bc of COVID).
We are having septic issues, so can only take 1 short shower each day. I have my 4 mile or so walk scheduled for about 5 - then I will come home and have my shower.
We are not doing laundry right now. Our stinky/sweaty workout clothes are building up.
Hopefully whatever they should be coming to do Thursday will fix our problem.

@1214mom I sure hope you get your septic issues sorted this week!

Thanks @orangepurple. Sounds like they can start Friday.
It’s not going to be cheap!

I’m looking for resources–online or otherwise. I’m signing up to do a century bike ride (62 miles) to raise money for a cancer support organization where I’m on the board. It’s virtual–ride on your own and report distances. I have two weeks to finish. I rode a bike a year ago and did 7 miles. How do I train so that I can finish the bike ride in 5-6 days, e.g., 10-12 miles a day. The ride is in Oct.

Looking for training recommendations–how many miles to start, how often, how to add on, etc. etc. I’m fairly fit (do yoga every day), walk, and used to do weight training regularly, but not that often recently. I also did spin class, but my membership at the health club expired and I didn’t renew because I couldn’t put it on hold when I was at our vacation home (I’m retired.) When I’m at vacation home, I work with a trainer.

@1214mom ugh on the septic system! It’s always something, isn’t it? We had the A/C peeps at our house this morning. We had noticed the system was dripping from the attic line over the gutter and onto the outside unit. Fortunately, it wound up being no big deal. They extended the pipe so it would discharge at the flat part of the gutter. Our system is < 1 year old, so it shouldn’t have issues! We also had to put in a new boiler a year before that. $$$$$!!!

Today was a bust. My calf was still bugging me. My allergies were bothering me. The heat was bothering me. I felt like a big bloated cow sloshing around => not in a good mood. I walked slowly and then did yoga. I have Thurs, Friday, and Sunday off already. I may take Saturday as well. And then maybe just easy to nothing the other two days. Of course, years past when I feel like this and take off, it doesn’t do anything, but maybe this time. Have I mentioned how much I hate this time of year? (Signed: old grouchy lady)

You don’t need to train to ride a bike for 12 miles, 12 miles on a trainer won’t even take you an hour. I think you could VERY easily do 62 miles in 4 days. Most spin classes are 45 mins and I would expect you to have done the equiv of 15 miles in an energetic class. If you are riding outside but reporting virtual, you still don’t need training to ride 62 miles across 2 weeks. Don’t fret at all IMO. Just go ride your bike.

@Bromfield2 Are you riding outside on the road or inside on an exercise bike?
Do you have the bike already?
I think if you have done spin class in the past, you should be able to do this easily. I have never done spin class myself and only ride a bike about two hours a year these days, so if I were going to do it, I would want to start easy, like go for about half an hour, don’t do two days in a row, and see how you feel after three easy, non-consecutive days, just to avoid any kind of soreness, then start ramping it up.

@1214mom I think septic issues are my worst nightmare. We had to replace ours 15 years ago–it was as much as my daughter’s college tuition. Good luck!!

The hiking club announced Sunday hikes will start up again now that Illinois allows gatherings of 50 people.

The club email said if more than 50 people show, they will break into 2 groups.

I’m not in any hurry to hike for 4 hours in single file with a whole bunch of people.

It looks like the club has rescheduled the annual 23 mile hike (cancelled in May) to October. I could be convinced to do that one!

Honestly, for time put in, I get a LOT more out of barbell training.

But, I do miss the club members & tailgating after the hikes!

On the other hand, the yard is looking good. (Using Sunday hiking time to pay attention to the yard…)

@Midwest67 Yes, I can see why you don’t want to spend 4 hours in single file trying not to get too close to people. Even though I miss the group things I was doing before, I am just not ready to go back, even for outdoor activities. It just seems too stressful to try to keep social distancing for any extended period. I’ll be waiting a bit longer myself. And working out in the basement.

Even tho we get free gym membership thru Silver Sneakers, I’m skeptical and not gonna chance it.

btw: anyone snag one of those Under Amour face masks before they sold out?

Thanks @Bromfield2. I’m hoping it won’t be that expensive, but I have heard it may wind up being pretty expensive. We’re not to tuition cost yet - I’ll be whining a LOT if we get there. (Then again, I was paying tuition for 3 kids for 2 years, so…)
Regarding your biking question, I agree with the person above about it not being very difficult to get to 62 miles on a bike over several days. It’s fairly easy for someone in reasonable shape to ride 10-12 miles in an hour (on flat ground or on a trainer. If you’re talking lots of hills it gets harder quickly).

Just a quick chime in to say that I hope @ClassicMom98 's calf is better, that @1214mom 's septic problems are a thing of the past, and that @sushiritto is doing well without having to balance the weight of his extra hair.

My back is finally better (hurray!) and I got some bands for pull-up assist. Walking/running pretty faithfully with a bit of pilates here and there with one kid. We went camping for 2 nights last week (I really wanted a change of scenery now that we’ve cancelled everything for this summer) and got to go kayaking on a lake one day. So utterly grateful for that time.

Kayaking sounds wonderful @illneversaynever !

Gyms opened up in my town today – I went into 24 Hour Fitness just to use the weight machines. (My goal is to get in and out pretty quickly). It now requires an appointment to reserve time. They should call it 10-hour fitness instead because there are only 10 hour-long time slots during the day, with a half hour between each so the staff can do clean up.

Almost everyone was wearing a mask, which as far as I know is required indoors locally in any case. I saw one woman on a treadmill with no mask, which I thought was nuts – the weather was gorgeous outside today — sunny, clear, temps probably in the low 70’s. – so I don’t know why anyone would want or need to use an indoor treadmill if they are averse to wearing a mask.

@illneversaynever I did notice today that I was listing to one side during my front squats. Hmmm.

@ClassicMom98 Have you ever tried one of these Hypervolt muscle stimulators? I see the youngsters using them all the time in the gym.

Just a walk with a buddy on Sunday. We had some coffee and then walked back home. In the afternoon, the big news was I had a fro yo. A rare dessert sighting (and consuming) for me.

I started with front squats today. The program called for a heavy double. It was a double, that’s for sure. I transitioned to a combo of light-ish snatches and rope climbs. The HIIT was 12:30 WOD of toes to bar and thrusters. And I finished with a 1-mile recovery run. Legs were dead by then.

No separate core section today. Between the toes to bar and the rope climbs, where at the top of the 15’ rope, I lift my legs up and go inverted, using my legs to “ring the bell”, ala the Spartan Race technique.

I think I lost 2 CoronaVirus lbs by going back to the gym. No dog to futz around with.

@Midwest67 - I hear you on not feeling comfortable with the group hikes, but missing the social aspects. Would love to go but just not comfortable yet. As I mentioned here , I got together for an outside social distance coffee chat with 8 other women from the larger group on Sunday and we all agreed it was so nice to see each other in person. But not one of us is comfortable with the large group runs yet. In addition to the club members, it’s a lot to think about with all of the trails here being so crowded. Unlike the very small group I have been running with, the club runs start at 8 AM, and that’s when people come out in droves.

Perhaps you could arrange to get together with a few of the people from your hiking group and hold a social distance thing like we did.

@FallGirl

I will kick the can on this one (hiking).

Summer hiking is not my favorite. Heat, humidity, & mosquitoes.

The yard work is beginning to pay dividends. Flowers are blooming and it (the yard) looks like someone cares!
