Definitely recommend pants, but I often exercise topless.
@midwest67-- Congrats on the job
Congratulations @Midwest67 ! If your commute is that short and you get an hour lunch, I highly recommend the lunchtime naps. They are especially awesome in the winter.
Still chugging along. Today was the run and P90X legs and back. I’ve done this one a bunch of times. It feels normal now. Not outrageous.
In the old days, I used to run in shorts in the dark down in the 20s. I’ve since switched to capris in the 20s-40s. I like how I look in them better anyway. Below 20 and I’ll switch to full tights. It doesn’t get that cold that often, which is why all my tights are still from 1992 when they weren’t more than bathing suit material. I don’t have a problem with my legs being cold - now my hands are another story. They are hopeless, especially as I had mild frostbite/frostnip on them years ago. But, I’m used to that by now and just keep on going.
When it’s too icy to run outside, I do Tabata exercises. I’ve been trying lots of different ones—burpees hurt my knees. Yesterday, I came up with a good one: started in the basement and ran up both sets of stairs to the second floor, then back down! Set my timer for 5 minutes. Very noisy, though. Will do it when husband is outside
Conratulations @Midwest67! I’m so glad you have good news!
Ran 5 hilly miles this morning. It was 38 degrees so I did wear full length running tights.
Wednesday and Thursday were just sort of normal walks of just under 4 miles.
Congratulations @Midwest67! Very excited for you!
When it’s in the 20’s and 30’s, I have fleece lined tights that I wear. They are extremely comfortable and I don’t get too warm in them. Mine are lululemon that I bought on a lulu buy/sell board. I would look at athleta ones, I saw some in the store and they looked very nice. They will go on sale I am sure after the holidays.
If it’s colder than that, I have a pair of sporthill pants and Solomon xc ski pants. I can layer a base layer under them. I’ve been warm exercising in them to 0.
Been outside walking my local trails. We are getting a snowstorm tomorrow so that gig may be up. I’ve enjoyed this bonus time I’ve had this year!
If you don’t like the cold I’ll be a + one to the fleece lined tights. I have a nice pair from Athleta that are a few years old - gosh like 6 years old - and they are still perfect. I only wear them for running or walking if it’s probably 20’s or below.
I also have a pair of tights I got from Costco this year that are just a little fleecy - for the price they are really a nice pair for a step down from the fleece lined ones.
One advantage of the fleece lined tights is they (mine anyway…) protect from wind as well.
Tonight’s walk was just over 4.6 miles in 2 chunks:
- 3.3 miles through neighborhoods to our local beer garden. This was not the walk we had planned but we got sort of turned around inside a neighborhood and added 0.7 miles to this leg
- 1.3 miles home from the local following a couple of beers and brat.
Back squats today. After warmup, I hit a heavy single.
The HIIT was a 2,000m row, lots of jump rope and 10 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups and 15 air squats.
Over 90 minutes of soccer this morning. It was a great day to play temperature wise-- low 50s and cloudy.
Had a fun strong workout this morning. In order to minimize risk at the gym, I only do the stairmonster in Saturday/Sunday mornings when it’s not crowded. Usually it’s just me and one other guy at the beginning and maybe 3-4 others when I leave. And the one workday a week I ride the bike for 30 min while wearing a mask. Usually there are maybe 20 people there. (10% capacity)
Anyhow, my stairmonster workout was really strong. And then the workout of the day was called “Game Day.” It was all sorts of drills/exercises based off of various sports. It was hard as heck, but really fun to try. I’m not very good at tennis then an additional 15 min of “Overtime.” Anyhow, I realized that when it is icy sometime this season and I can’t run or do cardio at the gym, that some of these videos would be a decent substitute.
I figure if the video makes me sweat and I feel some soreness the next day, it’s worthwhile!
Good fresh air and fitness day. 8 miles on the airdyne this morning when it was raining, followed by a 4 mile afternoon walk in balmy 50’s for Ohio on Dec. 12!
Inside the home gym today, since today was cloudy, cold and dreary.
Built to a heavy hang clean after warmup on the air bike and stretching. In between sets I hopped on the GHD for 4 sets of 15 sit-ups.
The HIIT today was 5 rounds of 500m row, 12 deadlifts, 9 hang cleans and 6 push press.
I guess my zoom yoga class (through my local rec center) yesterday was worthwhile - I am indeed sore today.
Low 50s is my favorite running temp. It has been in the 30s here, and though I’m not afraid to try the cold I’ve avoided since the footing seems iffy. But it’s Colorado, so the sun should melt out the sidewalks and trails at the lake soon.
Not sure when I last posted, but I’m continuing to do well riding my spin bike. I should have gone outside both yesterday and today, as the weather is pretty great here, but I did at least 90 minutes of indoor biking each day. I ride “hard” for 30 minutes, and ride “normally” for about an hour.
As it turns out, both of my sons are doing 80 mile bike rides this weekend. One did so yesterday, and the other today. When they were younger I would have to drag them out to go biking (or hiking). Now they seem to enjoy both. (They are now 24 and 26).
Lots of chores today including buying and decorating a Christmas tree.
We ended taking a “short” way to our Mexican place so total walk today was 3.3 (2.3 there and 1 home)
If I didn’t look forward to working out so much, today would have been skipped. Pouring windy rain - oh joy. Had there not been a pandemic and spike, I would have done part of it at the gym. But as it was 48 degrees, I figured I could tough it out. Decided to do an out and back, so once I got out there, I had no choice but come back. 5 miles out wasn’t so bad. The 5 miles back was into the wind which was awesome (super sarcasm). But it got done. Smartest thing I did was put a towel and complete extra set of clothes and shoes into the shed before I ran. I huddled by the heater as I changed for round 2. Round 2 was a 15 min core video followed by the Asylum Volume 1 Strength video. It was new and different and time went by quickly.
Now Wednesday’s predicted icy/light wintery mix will not be outside. I’ll either make that my masked gym bike day (followed by shed workout) or just do a cardio like workout in the shed before lifting. Depends on how icy it is and the road conditions. It seems like we’ve had a lot of rain this year, so I looked it up. We’re at 55 inches already - normal year is 44. Blech.
Plugging along here with a mix of outside runs/walks (mainly running now) and indoor cycling on DH’s Peleton. I usually watch my own content and don’t do the Peleton workouts. Good enough for me! Days are short.
@ClassicMom98 I’m shivering just thinking of your wet run!
Feeling a little unsettled about everything including exercise. Just distracted. I can’t believe Christmas is next week. I feel like it’s going to come and go like the wind. Pretty typical for me to not love the holiday time but this year of course it’s all intensified.
All that to say, not feeling entirely exercise motivated but getting enough done daily. Have been able to maintain my summer Apple watch movement rates so that’s something.
Weight workout this morning. Will round that out with some walking later.
