My workout was a bit flat this morning. My legs (quads and rear) felt heavy while running - and I wanted to add some quick bursts. I tried, but they weren’t very quick. Oh well. Then the video of the day was vertical plyo. LOL. I tried really hard. I promise! But it’s hard for me - who likes hard numbers - to tell if I’m improving. Am I burning out faster because I’m jumping higher, or am I just wimping out? Maybe a bit of both here and there. I do know I improved on one move (decoy split jumps) because I couldn’t do it AT ALL the first time. The second time I did the video, I sort of got it. Then on Saturday we did a harder variation where I sorta got it, so today back to the easier version, I could do it! Clear as mud to ya’ll I’m sure.
I’m still waffling on what to do tomorrow - attempt to go to the gym and bike (and workout in shed after) or do everything in the shed. It’s supposed to start light freezing rain right around when I’d go. It will switch to rain around 9-10 and continue raining until late evening. So not a lot of time to dry out before the 33-35* drops below freezing and reice. So, I may try to go to the gym tomorrow and stay home Thursday… Or maybe not. Decisions, decisions. I am also toying with telling my boss I’ll WFH for part of the day and do a training workshop online, but then H already has WFH tomorrow. Having H home and concentrating on a video may not work well. More decisions…
Weather definitely makes things challenging. During my usual walking time tomorrow afternoon, we are expected to have heavy rain, perhaps mixing with freezing rain. If that happens, I will skip my walk.
Tonight’s soccer game was played in roughly 30 degree weather (not including wind chill)
Oh yeah. 40 and rainy I might do for a short time - running, not walking. 30s and rainy - nope. I made that mistake years ago and paid dearly. Ran 6 miles in pouring 33* rain (ankle deep puddles and all) to the gym. The gym was not warm and I lifted in freezing wet clothes. THEN, I ran home the 2 miles in the same conditions. I came down with bronchitis and had mild frost bite/frost nip on my fingers. To this day (15ish years later), any time my fingers get wet, they burn. It’s so much fun in this time of covid, I tell you. I will run in snow, not ice, and not 33* rain.
And that’s what we had this morning. 33* feels like 24*. It was just barely misting when I went to the gym, but that was enough for me. The weather kept most people gone, so it felt OK. I wore my mask for a 60 min bike ride. Then headed back to the shed and did P90X shoulders and arms. I think we dodged most of the freezing rain/ice. The only real threat is if the roads freeze up overnight. Hopefully not.
DS2 is home and requested our longtime family Saturday-night tradition: homemade hamburgers and fries. Dh and I quit doing that years ago after the kids were gone, but we said sure. This opened a bit of a floodgate to some old, poor eating habits such as holiday sweets. Since Sunday, I have felt poorly – sleepy and just run down. I take an injection quarterly and had it Sunday afternoon. I think between the meds and poor eating in the past several days, I am really feeling it. I have fallen asleep in the middle of the day for the past three days. I never nap! This morning, I had to go a friend’s house, and she gave me some of her amazing holiday sweets and, thud, that’s how they feel in my stomach.
Anyway, I know that I’ve been doing well on my exercising, but I feel like these past few days is proof that my eating also has changed dramatically. Did anyone see Super Size Me? I am feeling lethargic like Morgan Spurlock did.
Yes… I do remember Super Size Me. Luckily your detour will be shorter than Morgan’s. Best wishes as you get back on track. Maybe your DS2 will join you on something fun outdoors.
Anyone else struggling with these emoticons? The heart is easy, but it doesn’t always seem appropriate. But then when I click on a different one, it often doesn’t show unless I go to a different page and come back. Anyhow…
I was just thankful today that I got in a run without falling down! At bedtime it was mid 30s and the pavement was completely saturated with a forecast of a low of 28. I woke up in the middle of the night and it was still 34. Got up and it was still 34. I decided to do a super slow run in case it dropped while I was out - I’ve done that before. It’s pretty wild but nothing I’d do in my “old” age. But, it didn’t, and the time went by super fast. Finished with the Speed and Agility workout. I know I don’t do everything right coordination wise, but it felt somewhat easier today, though it could be partially because my run was so easy. And tomorrow is Friday and a half day!
Got some new Altra shoes (Escalante model) that the local running store recommended for me. They are zero drop and feel really good- wide toe box. Not as much cushioning as my other shoes, but I think they will be a good option. I like to mix things up. 45 minutes outside. I don’t envy those of you in the colder climates.
Lightweight reporting in. I have been doing fairly well with exercise - riding my spin bike and doing light weights, plus occasionally walking. I am DONE with work for the year, so I plan to do more exercise. We certainly won’t have many social commitments
Today was a no-barbell active recovery session. I warmed up with the air bike and some light stretching. The workout was 27 mins total with minute 1 burpees, minute 2 rowing or bike and minute 3 KB swings. And finished up with 3x10 of glute ham raises for core.
I think you mean adjustable dumbbells. I don’t have any experience with them.
Here’s one article about various brands:
Barbells are typically 20kg or 45 lbs. There are “Bella” versions, which are 15kg or 35 lbs. And they’re loadable with plates, cast iron or bumper plates are most popular.
Good Morning everyone! Not much new to report as I am just continuing to zoom yoga, lift a few light weights and run. The running is pretty much on the treadmill right now though, we had snow, then rain, then more snow a few days ago. I don’t mind the cold but am nervous about hitting an icy spot and falling. I need to check in today with my running buddies and see if we can come up with a place to run outside tomorrow that will be pretty clear.
As for the emoji’s - count me as another who does not like them. I miss the way we used to use the helpful button as a virtual hug.
@FallGirl Yes, you guys got hit much harder snow wise than us. We got our typical 33* rain. Depressing. Snow is FUN! But not the ice that comes afterwards.
@HMom16 We found those adjustable dumbbells to be very expensive. We tried to look at getting some for older S for his apartment. Even Walmart seemed crazy. We got VERY lucky many eons ago, we picked up real ones 5s through 40s at Sears. They had them on a mega clearance. I want to say 70% off. We hardly used them in the last 20 years until now, but at that price we couldn’t pass them up. We also have plates that can be added to dumbbell bars and an EZ curl bar. They can hold up to 85# per dumbbell. But again, we bought them so long ago, I had no idea what we paid for them.
I enjoyed the route I did so much yesterday, I repeated it again today. Same old roads, different combo made it nice mentally. Without the fear of freezing, I was several minutes faster. I also got to see an “old friend” again. It had been a few years, but I used to often pass this older (now in his 70s?) guy walking up the big hill. I don’t know if he’s walking for leisure or to work or because he has no place to go, but it looks like he’s had a hard life. I saw him yesterday and exchanged pleasantries and he noted “it’s been a long time!” I saw him again today and wished him a Merry Christmas. I’m just glad he’s still here. Finished with the Asylum Strength workout again. I had more oomph this morning, possibly because I knew what was coming. Or maybe because it’s FRIDAY! Oh, and @1214mom enjoy your time off!!!
