My walk score is 4, and there is not even a bus stop that could be walked to within miles. That is why I had to buy cars for my kids when they were in high school. I do walk around our neighborhood fairly often. It’s about a two mile loop, plus getting to the loop part.
Thanks for posting that link @Colorado_mom. I typed in my address and our score is 60. I do a lot of running/walking in my neighborhood. I frequently walk to the library and we sometimes walk to the Farmers Market and on errands. H walked to the CVS this afternoon. That’s about a mile away.
We are planning to move in about a year and a half and walkablity is a huge priority for me.
I’m not sure why my area shows so low walk score since we have sidewalks and stores/food about a mile away. But mostly what I like is our parks/lake trail about 1.5 mile away. Since I run around the lake (3.5 miles) usually I drive over … once in a while bike if weather and schedules permit. Someday if I am older and no longer running, I like the idea that there is a pretty destination walkable from here.
I don’t have a pretty personal picture of my water views like @jackief (her photo was very fun to me since I know it’s in a familiar area we visit annually to see family). Gonna try a screenshot from website to show my lake trail views -
Super crowded soccer night (I think we 11v11) but still got in 6K steps in 90 minutes
Wow ! That is beautiful! We are fortunate to live about 2 miles from a Regional Park which we walk in regularly. It is very pretty although somewhat crowded these days.
Late work meeting and early volunteer meetings meant we just did a quick 3.4 miles. To change up we did the loop in the reverse direction from how we normally do it
I had to get out of the backyard gym today, so I ran my 5-mile trail run.
My arms and shoulders were tired from yesterday’s muscle-up and pull-up workout. So, I’ll do today’s workout tomorrow.
I had a run today at 61 degrees, cloudy and a breezy but really nice.
Does anybody else run in cycling jerseys with back pockets? They don’t breath much (the sleeveless ones are better but can still be hot), but today a short sleeved cycling jersey with wind resistant shorts was perfect. I’ve found a few of cycling jerseys at a local ARC thrift shop for under $5 each. (My daughter snagged one of them for cycling).
Still hanging in there. Not a good mental week. Physically, it’s been OK I guess. I’m pretty tired of rain/rainy weather. Technically this morning was rainy, but the wind blowing the 35* hazy mist made it feel like it was. My ATs have been a tad temperamental, so I subbed a non plyo workout for today after the run. Total Body Core, Phase 3, Week 4 from 80 Day Obsession. It’s a goodie. My workouts are definitely the best part of the day. Too bad they are over by 7am. Get through today and tomorrow will be Friday.
@Colorado_mom when I picture cycling jerseys I’m thinking of the tight fitted jerseys - is that what you mean? I personally don’t like anything form fitting besides a bathing suit and definitely you would not find me running in a to-the-skin top. I’m fine with layers but the outer layers at the very least need to be LOOSE. Not to mention the breathability factor.
Much of that is personal preference but I also think if something is too fitted you risk more skin irritation with the movement your upper body/torso has with running.
When I was on my walk yesterday I saw a woman with a good idea. The sections of a dock are stored on a beach for the winter. She was doing alternating step ups onto the dock section. I remarked that it was a good idea, and she said it was easier on the joints. I didn’t take a close look but will in the future, I think it is too tall for me to do a jump up to the dock but maybe the steps like she was doing would be a good idea. I would have to wear more sand appropriate sneakers.
@abasket - Yea, good point - you want to avoid too tight. Probably the reason cycling jerseys work for me because I am very small can easily find them with much looser fit than you’d wear for cycling. The zip neck is a nice feature - that would be available for some running tops too. I love having back pockets for phone and water flask, so in cooler weather sometimes I’ve been wearing sleeveless cycling jersey under a warmer long sleeved running top.
Just a short 3.25 mile tonight (boo on day job pushing later into the day)
Today was an out of the ordinary workout for me.
For strength, I bench pressed to a single heavy. The HIIT was:
1,000m row
1.25 mile air bike
40 bench presses at 85-90% BW
1.25 mile air bike
1,000m row
25-min time cap. I finished at 23:54.
We had nice 4.1 mile rainy walk. The only bummer was that I didn’t grab rain gear so was a little wet by the end
Long game of morning soccer (105 minutes) so a ton of steps.
I am wading in here and counting on the thread title of “Hardcore and LIGHT”. I have struggled with exercise my whole life because I have some issues surrounding feeling short of breath. So while I am not sedentary, and I do go for long walks, walking fast up a hill, or doing a lot of weights have been very difficult for me.
We recently bought a spin bike from a friend who upgraded. My DH was more into it than me. However, three weeks later I am LOVING IT! I told myself to just do five minutes the first time I got on. I have an Apple watch and I jumped to my target HR immediately and felt awful, but i could slow down and adjust and I ended up doing 10 minutes the first time, grudgingly.
In just a short time I am now doing 20 min a day at a higher resistance and it feels good. I can definitely feel a difference in my legs and today, while putting away boxes in the attic, I went up and down and didn’t even get winded.
This tells me that I was horribly out of shape (despite being at a normal weight or slightly under) and that I can improve my cardiac fitness more easily than I thought. Hoping to add some weights in now to work on my upper body.
Nice progress @surfcity! Often the hardest part is to just get started.
Yesterday I did some short fitness videos in late evening (with bonus of getting to listen on clock radio to BBC news, a nice change). Today was low 50s and lovely sunshine so ran at the lake trail 7km. LOTS of people out there, with an unusually high concentration of dogs due to the fine weather (aligned with weekend) and dry trail.
@surfcity and THIS is how you start - at a doable activity and with simple results that make you feel accomplished in whatever way!
And you are right - plenty of people you don’t have a weight problem but are not in shape. It will help that you aren’t also battling extra weight - you may even gain a little as you build muscle a little - that is ok!
We will support you!
I walked this morning a couple
Miles but we had freezing fog and so I had to be careful.
Painted our half bath and then hopped on the airdyne for 10 miles.
