Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@surfcity Do you live in Huntington Beach, CA?

Great job! It’ll take time developing a “cardio base.” And yep, skinny folks can be out of shape.

Beautiful days here lately. Sunny and around 70 degrees. So, I took my barbell and plates to the local school track.

Today’s workout was working up to heavy clean, front squat and push press. And a few laps.

The HIIT was 5 rounds of a 400 m run followed by 10 heavy (for me) thrusters. I could have gone lighter with the thrusters and finished way faster, but I wanted to struggle some with the heavier thrusters. I finished just under the 20-minute time cap.

I tend to get really motivated at the end of the HIIT to complete the workout. For core, I did a 3x10 of barbell rows.

Great job - better to be moving than not moving is what I say, no matter what you’re doing or how fast or slow. I’m definitely a “light weight” compared to many of the people here, but it’s a supportive crowd. I have been riding bikes for a long time, but I just recently got a very nice spin bike for home, and it’s my primary exercise these days.
Keep up the good work, and don’t be afraid to post - we all want to celebrate small successes.

great job surfcity! My husband is one of these people who is not overweight but not in shape. He also has back problems and sees a chiropractor. When we go for walks together, he doesn’t want to do more than 3 miles, so he often peels off earlier than me.

I am doing fitness videos with him, we start with a core/back one and sometimes he joins me for an upper body one. He is using our lowest weights, but at least he is doing it and not getting dissuaded by my using heavier weights.

side note- I mentioned a woman doing step ups on some dock pieces stored on our beach. I tried to do it and it was too tall for me to step up with good form, I’d estimate 18-24" or so.

Great work @surfcity. It is all about doing what you can

Quick check in. I’m still doing my stuff, but younger S just left for school so we are back to an empty nest. H and I are headed to the big city an hour away just so he can go inside one comic shop, and I can sit in the car. Otherwise, I just might throw up. I wish we could do something more, but we had over 200 cases yesterday for a 100K population. Sigh.

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone!! It makes a difference. I try to remember what my friend who is a personal trainer tells me - “the best exercise is the one you actually DO!”

Yesterday I did some yoga with Adriene to get some stretching and upper body in. I miss in person yoga classes but her videos are pretty engaging.

At the fitness center I used at work, often I was one of the most out of shape people in the group (especially when I first started almost 20 years ago and then restarted a few times after being away from it). It was a bit discouraging, but I’d remind myself - “it’s probably ME that is getting the most benefit today, since I am so far out of shape, making noticeable quick progress”. On days where I wish I were in better shape, I remind myself there have been times where I had to do modified jumping jacks.

I’ve been using the spin bike I got at least 3-4 times a week. Today I did 2 hour long rides for a total of over 35 miles. I’ve also been trying to do some stretching and light weights while we watch TV. I figure even 10-15 minutes is better than nothing.

Tonight’s walk was roughly 4.3 miles to dinner (fitbit weirdly stopped tracking for a bit) and then 1 mile home

Today we did 11.4 miles at a Manassas National Military Park. We combined the trails for the 1st and 2nd battle into a nice long loop.

Doubled my steps goal - but this is more a measure of how sedentary I’ve been the past few days/weeks rather than a big achievement. I’m still under 5,000 for the day (but should hit that by bedtime.)

I walked 4.3 miles around the neighborhood. I debated doing my bike also, but I didn’t get much sleep last night, so decided to relax instead.

@HMom16 - That’s awesome that you doubled your step goal! It’s ok that you are starting slow. At the beginning of fitness improvements, just “not sitting” is good progress.

When I’ve started/restarted exercise over the years, it has been an extra reminder to eat better (and drink more water) too.

Today , my FB memory reminded me that four years ago I signed up for the exercise class that I’m still doing 3x/week. More than 40 pounds lighter and much stronger. Yea, exercise!

Today’s workout kicked my butt. Definitely can tell that I slacked off over the holidays.

Today was a pretty good day. Sunday, my eyes swelled shut and black (underneath) AGAIN! I have got to figure out what’s triggering it. Younger S leaving and crying didn’t help. Monday was slightly better, though my workout was a slog. Yesterday, was a bit better, but not awesome. My eyes seems almost normal. Today, felt pretty good but now my eye will not stop running (clear) again. Ugh. It does seem like it happens once/month, but it’s always starts on a Sunday morning. Or maybe it is stress. I woke H up with a nightmare last night. I’ve done this more times in the last year than the previous 25+.

Anyhow, I ran the same route as Tuesday but it was 4 minutes faster, so I tacked on an extra short loop. Overall pace still wasn’t fast, but not as slow as Monday-Tuesday. Lifting was P90X2 Total Body. It does a lot of balance stuff while lifting, so it was more fun than hard. It was hard, but in a different way if that makes sense.

@Youdon_tsay that is amazing! What a great memory to remind you of your progress. Remind me what is on your menu of preferred exercise???

Started this great day with 30 minutes on the airdyne followed by a pup walk in the lightly fallen snow and then some snow sweeping - we have a large double corner lot with two driveways and I’m manic about keeping the pavement clear!

When I went for my walk this morning (which is getting more difficult to motivate with the colder weather and wind) I reexamined the dock pieces on the beach. I found one place where it wasn’t too high to do step ups, and I did 10 on each leg on the way out, and on the way back. Not too tall that I was swinging my body to get up on the platform. I will add this to my route, increasing the reps, and the maybe at some point move to a place with a slightly higher distance.

Other than that, I am pretty meh as the winter and pandemic drag on.
