Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Part of “wellness” is letting it all out.

Your boys sound like they are capable and responsible! It’s our nature to worry over all the details - because we know they are going on - whether we need to or not!

One step at a time, just like your running.

Quoting myself. Another “disciple” or convert of mine. ^^^This person told me that I and another guy in the gym have inspired him to do more cardio, lean out, and maybe do a Murph with me by the end of summer.

So, he shows up yesterday with a brand new 5.11 weight vest and he was doing pull-ups (could only do 28 of them) interspersed with riding the air bike. I told him that running is involved with a Murph, but he’s starting slowly.

Sometimes running does pay off! See what I found this morning!

JACKPOT!!!

Mixed bag for me this morning - some days I don’t want to commit to too much of one thing - lol. Some upper body cardio, a short run and then the obligatory but peppy pup walk. 4.5 miles before hitting the laptop and eying up the WEEKEND!!

I found $7 last week in a fleece vest pocket!

Bench press PR yesterday. And a ton of moral support in the gym too. A very supportive gym membership.

So, now I’ve PR’ed on every lift (snatch, clean & jerk, squat and bench), and the Murph too, but one lift escapes me.

My nemesis, the deadlift. I suck at deadlift. I got close to a PR a few weeks ago, but I couldn’t get it more than inch or two off the ground.

Just an update that I am still going to the gym and I am now halfway through my gym’s Biggest Loser contest. I was sitting at #6 for the women at last report but I had a good weigh in last week and should rise in the rank.
However, I weigh in again tomorrow morning and I don’t think I will be down from last week’s lucky weigh in. We will see. I am avoiding salt and did cardio this morning. I should drink more water today.
The contest is mostly for motivation, I am trying to make good changes for life. I bought some low sugar protein shakes and stuff to mess around with. Also kefir (???) I don’t know what to do with this really – is it going to taste bad if it’s just plain (the flavored ones had so much sugar). I got some Chobani yogurt protein shakes that were on sale to try. We will see.
I can feel my abs getting stronger and my balance is getting better too. I am starting to enjoy Body Combat classes (air kickboxing to music) now that I have gone a few weeks and am getting the hang of it.
Lifting heavier things is fun. I am still trying to go on the big side of dumbbells and it’s nice.

One suggestion from me - who is not your trainer, or your doctor or your nutritionist!

Any of the drinks you buy for convenience might not be the best tasting or in addition to protein have a lot of sugar or sugar substitute. But sometimes convenience wins!

As far as kefir - sort of a fermented yogurt drink… I personally prefer to buy a good plain full fat yogurt, put it in a blender with fresh or frozen (non sweetened) fruit, add your own sweetener (honey, agave, maple syrup in moderation)or other dairy (like cottage cheese), ice or liquid, blend and know EXACTLY what you are getting and controlling the taste. If you keep the ingredients on hand it you can be drinking it in 5 minutes or less. You can also add protein powder.

If you find lifting fun, I say more power to you!!!

I love to drink plain keffir with a slice of nicely toasted sourdough bread. But I’m not into sweet stuff. As @abasket said, it sort of tastes like plain yogurt. Good source of probiotics!

I’d always agree with drinking lots of water everyday for the rest of your life, but water also adds weight and if you REALLY want to cut as much weight as possible, then stop or severely limit drinking fluids until after you weigh in for the contest. It’s only about 16-18-20 hours away, so it’s not too long.

Now, having said that, if you have any medical condition that would cause any issue with limiting your water/fluid intake for less than a day, then please don’t do it. Only if you’re otherwise healthy.

I like to use Kefir as the base to a fruit smoothie. On its own it is a bit sour for my liking. But blended with some berries and a half a banana? Perfection.

Great idea!

Good idea! My husband likes the flavored varieties, but they are loaded with sugar. I used to dilute his keffir with my unflavored one to halve the sugar, but I did not think of making him a banana smoothie instead.

Incidentally, I’ve often been someone who does’t like banana in my fruit smoothie. I feel the flavor overpowers the other fruit. Recently in the morning I have tried - banana, bottled unsweetened coffee (like to make iced coffee), some chocolate/cocoa, and milk, ice. DELICIOUS and quenching on warm mornings!!!

Ask mentioned in MOB/MOG dress thread, we had the most wonderful time at son’s outdoor wedding and reception (a fancy catered dinner under a clear top tent).

I did think of this bunch because of a story for you, involving balance / recovery. It’s a bit long but fun to share.

At one point my 96 year old Dad was contemplating watching the ceremony (promised to be only 15-20 minutes) from top of a small hill, instead of walking down to his chair (there were chairs for som of us “dignitaries”…. told son “mom is a fainter”, need chair). Had to talk Dad into it. All of the sudden I looked across the grounds and saw the procession lining up, headed by parents of bride then parents of groom (LOL - this MOG was MIA). I went dashing across the field and DANG, tripped over an extension cord. And that my friends is a good example of when it is really an excellent thing to be able to recover your balance instead of splatting onto the ground. Ha, I did feel a bit like Dick Van Dyke on the opening credits of his old TV show.

I’m just here to complain that the weather is messing with my pickleball schedule. We have had an option of playing indoors when it was too windy or rainy, but now that school is getting out they will have summer camp at the indoor locales. BOO

Goodness, I’m glad they didn’t start without you!!

Things did get a bit disorganized during “rain delay”, but all turned out ok :grinning: Just like for running, I was ready with various layers (including a purple bolero sweater and mom’s vintage gloves)

OK, I admit it, I have a problem. I did another Murph today.

Earlier in the week, I had planned to get in the gym early and do the Murph with the gym owner, but alas, I slept in.

Yada, yada, yada, I completely annihilated my PR from Saturday 6/3, by more than 5 minutes. My last mile was my fastest with the vest.

Here’s a chart, which breaks down the various levels for Murph times:

  • 75+ Minutes – Beginner
  • 60 to 75 Minutes –Level 1
  • 50 to 60 Minutes – Level 2
  • 45 to 50 Minutes – Level 3
  • 40 to 45 Minutes – Elite
  • Under 40 Minutes – Super Elite

I have a new Murph “address,” I’ve now moved into the “Elite” category and not by a little. Tough week here, but this sure helped make it a little bit better.
