Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I think it can be a good mental health practice to adopt the “one step at a time” mantra. Glad to hear his hip surgery went well!

I try to tell myself there’s nothing I can do about it, so don’t think about it. Easier said than done though. But according to the local oncologist we don’t do anything anyway but take herbs. I’ve studied up on the blood flow cytology tests and the other two (FISH & IGHV) and see why he’s considered ok there. I’m just more concerned why the WBC counts seem to jump fast between may-June. They rose fairly steadily each year from 11/2020 to 11/2022 (11k, 16K, 19k) but then 6 months later jumped to 27K and then up to 31K only 1 month later. He did go on prednisone in April until June. So that could account for the jump to 27. But it still kept going up? I dunno.

And don’t ask why the PCP never brought the high counts up between 2020 and now when the surgeon brought it up. His pcp actually asked him “do you want me to refer you to the oncologist?” Uh yeah! Grumble.

In non serious news. Thanks to another thread, I bought older S/GF reusable Van Gogh bags because they need them in their hood and S is a Van Gogh fan. But I kept one to use as a new gym bag. My 10 year old sea world one has been in sad shape for a long time. (I let them keep the nicest ones)

Last Sunday’s Murph time 46:19.

My schedule is a bit upside down right now, but last night (Saturday), I got my SBD (squat, bench, deadlift), while getting in several sets of handstand push-ups.

I can’t remember the last time working out on a Saturday night, but that’s how the timing worked out.

This morning’s Murph time was 41:21. The gym owner conveniently forgot his running shoes, but he did a workout using the air bike.

 Tell him that Running shoes are overrated!

My kid once forgot her running shoes when doing a sprint triathlon… lol. She wanted to run her 5k in flip flops but I offered her my sporty flats. She did well on that run and even won some trophy in the “vintage” division (no wetsuits or racing bikes; she rode dad’s mountain bike ). That was definitely vintage running, lol.

I saw my PCP today and he said the same thing as Nephrologist… I don’t know what you’re doing, but keep doing it. Like Nephrologist, he also said that my cholesterol is too low. LDL and VLDL are really low and HDL is below normal. So, he wants me to bring up HDL (exercise, olive oil, fish, chocolate) without raising VLDL/LDL. On the flip side, cardiologist says nobody has cholesterol as low as yours… don’t change anything. Great! There’s nothing like having your heart restarted a couple of times to make you watch what you eat.

My little streak is at 475 days. I continue to play pickleball 3 days a week, even in the crazy heat. We’ve skipped a couple of outside riding days bc it’s so hot and humid, but I did the indoor bike instead.

Family beach vacation this week. Though my Apple Watch sent me a “trending” notice today that my exercise time has been lower than usual this week, I’ve been happy with my activity.

I get up before everyone else, walk the dog a mile, then do 30 minutes of something myself. During the day there is additionally swimming daily, pup walk and casual walking. I’ve managed so far to also meet my secondary daily goal - at least 8 miles on my feet by the end of the day.

Being truthful there is also a good bit of eating and it runs the gamut of healthy and delicious to not healthy but delicious. Will be excited to turn the rest of July and August and September into meals that take advantage of all the produce!!

Ha! I got the trending thing on my phone after mine too. I don’t worry about vacations. It’s vacation! That’s the point! ENJOY!

Checking in for H. His recovery is going really well! I wouldn’t have thought he’d be this good after 9 days. Still not lifting for legs, other than the PT stuff, but I think I’m going to move him up to the week 4-6 exercises. 1-4 seem easy. He doesn’t need a cane, but takes it places so people give him space. He still uses that cryo ice machine a few times a day and still takes advil/tylenol regularly and the incision is certainly still healing. But still, I wouldn’t have guessed. So that is good. He technically worked today - training zoom meeting, but will go back to school next week. Yes, they got out June 9th and teachers go back July 31st. But he will take the first 2 weeks off when the kids come back. and even then, I’ve told him he’s still going to have to modify his routine. Teaching is one thing… but he’s also the guy who is called to break up fights (between kids 150-200 pounds). And also every day 500 kids come running and jumping on him to give him hugs. I told him he can beat them off with his cane, lol.

I’m still doing my thing - hating the hot weather! But I can’t complain since this is our first bad heat all summer. It’s the last week of July! And I am enjoying the Lift More program. It’s fun and the time flies by.

And H has the leukemia Wake Forest appointment set now. Aug 7th. Crossing fingers that that one will go OK.

And his mom doesn’t sound like she will be with us much longer. Her Alzheimer’s seems to be to the point where she’s forgotten how to eat. Her BMI is at roughly 15 now. It wouldn’t surprise me if FIL doesn’t last much longer after her. It feels like he’s only lasted this long to make sure he was there for her. They’ve been married over 60 years.

And so we are still just taking things one day at a time around here…

@ClassicMom98 - sounds really good for your H’s recovery and wishing him the best with the Wake Forest appointment.

And your in-laws…you have a lot on your plate right now. Take care.

I just want to say I’m so impressed with your attitude in handling/triaging all these health needs - that positive attitude is so so important for everyone!

Also teacher should not have to go back so early!!

@ClassicMom98 be careful with letting H “technically work.” Obviously, I don’t know your situation, but if he is receiving any sort of short/long-term disability and he does anything work related, they can discontinue his disability payments. My company basically shutdown my network access and I was not allowed to touch my work laptop so that there was no appearance of me working. Luckily, I could still use my personal laptop to keep up my computer skills and do the “homework” that DW gave me. Just a thought.

He has no disability insurance through the school system or otherwise, but thanks!

Edit - he does have 230 sick days built up and is retiring after this year. The plan is to keep 200 which will be pay out roughly $6000. The rest will be lost.

Getting ready for vacation 2 (4 nights at Crater Lake, 2 on the Oregon coast and then a week at our condo in Central Oregon.

We’ve got lots of hikes planned at Crater Lake.

No soccer this week because thunderstorms closed the fields. We spent the time at bar instead

@Abasket – to be clear this isn’t a back up plan, this was always a scheduled part 2.

Dear gym users. Please do not wear heavy perfume at the gym. This is the 2nd time in a week where someone got on the stairmonster next to me wearing heavy perfume. It makes it difficult to breathe - something I really need to do on the stairmonster. Not to mention the headaches. Ugh.

And for giggles. Here was my balancing practice this morning. I know y’all are jealous of my supercool unicorn Xmas t-shirt, but you can’t have it.
