I like sockguy socks. Thin, synthetic, and colorful. My feet are pretty forgiving, though.
It has been a nice few days here of running and then doing the dryland swim workout. I am sore. The TV in front of the bike isn’t working so I have missed some indoor cycling. Yes, I could watch on my laptop so maybe I am lazy.
A few more swim friends have bought swim tethers and are swimming in their little backyard pools. I was going to MacGyver it, but now I am tempted to buy one. Right now the water is pretty cold, but if this stay at home order lasts past May first, I’ll be out there,
I got very upset today. Someone wrote a chalk message on the (public!!!) sidewalk telling the runners that they were not welcome here because they spew the virus all over. Really? And then there is that digital fakery that allegedly shows how a runner contaminates the air around her… just shaking my head.
I don’t know whether to click agree, like or helpful, but I really do sympathize with your post @BunsenBurner . Anyway, I’d take some colored chalk and write a NSFW message back, but that’s me. :grimace:
I kept my “bum” away from exercise today! It’s so hard. Back at it tomorrow.
@BunsenBurner - Wow! That would make me really angry. Last week on my long run, I found that I (as the runner) was the one who made the effort in running in the street or over in the grass b/c many of the walkers (some in larger groups) did not make the effort. Not knocking all walkers- H and I walk , too but seems as if many EXPECTED the runner to be the one to make the effort.
Don’t get me started on the people walking who did not even see me b/c their eyes were glued to their screens!
As I said, not criticizing all of the people walking, but that “message” was really out of line.
@BunsenBurner Ugh. Instead of writing something on the sidewalk, I’d be more apt to run back and forth and back and forth that stretch of sidewalk over and over and over and over every day for the next month. I’m fine with boredom.
Today it was 32*! We keep going from mid 80s to 30s-40s, but I suspect this was the last time I’ll see 30s for awhile. I enjoyed every step of my run. With the w/u and c/d it was a bit over 10 miles. Then the last day of phase 3, week 3. Booty day. Felt great. And then day 6/22 of the ab challenge. Felt strong there too. A nice way to start the day. And now I’m in the recliner under a heated blanket about to take a nap at 8am… After eating a bowl of hot Cheetos and a Reese’s bunny. Breakfast of champions. Saturdays are my junk food days, and I make the most of them.
Later we are going to make Easter cookies. We have such fun doing Xmas cookies being all obnoxious with weird shapes, icing and sprinkles. H suggested we do it again for Easter to liven things up. Jury is still out if we will use the bat cookie cutter…
Hard times bring out the worst in jealousy. Those darn runners. (rolling eyes)
It’s not like we are leaving our bodily sweat dripping on the pavement and flinging through the air! I too am usually the one making the move to go WAY to the side or even off the pavement to the grass or road. I actually think you can tell who has made exercising outside a habit - and who is seeing the literal sunlight for the first time because of the quarantine. They don’t understand that just as there are rules for the road, there are rules for the pavement/trail.
I will add that I have noticed the tone of our neighborhood chalk messages changing too. Initially they were all upbeat and fun. Now i"m noticing chalked out arrows designating 6 feet, messages like “PICK UP YOUR DOG POOP”, “PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING”, “SINGLE FILE PLEASE” - when it turns to commands it’s not as uplifting!
Well… if I’m being honest, I’m definitely dripping sweat onto the pavement and probably also flinging it a bit through the air as I flail by. But I’m painfully aware of this so am careful not to run close to anyone, even when passing.
I “ran” 7 miles and walked another mile in the warm up/cool down this morning. Slow. Felt like quitting. Didn’t. Feel good now that I’m done. I don’t really love getting up so early to run, but it’s really nice to run while it’s cool so worthwhile. Plus, watching the sunrise and the streaks of pink in the sky, listening to the changing sounds as different birds and things start to stir is nice.
^^^ Agree that it’s helpful to run/walk/bike early or late. Less people out and about. It’s a good strategy. Let the leisurely crowds have the mid part of the day.
I got in my truck for the first time in 10 days and drove to the path. It was chilly but sunny, and I was early enough to beat most of the families and dog walkers. There were a few runners but not too many. I felt completely safe. 4.5 miles, slow and high HR, but knee held up well. It was SO nice to be outside on the beautiful path. I did see pairs of people who I doubt lived in the same household- not shoulder to shoulder but not all that far apart. Also- a couple of teen running groups- probably a HS team. Very close to each other. I think the risk is pretty low, but still… not what we are being asked to do.
I am not much of a runner, but I’m trying to get back into the run/walk/run thing to give the dog a bit more exercise since the dog parks are closed and he now has to stay on the leash. So on any given excursion, I am a walker and a runner both. I am going really early (for me, that is! Like 6:45 or 7) so that there aren’t too many close encounters. I try to get off the sidewalk for anyone I see, just to do my part as a dog owner. Most of the people I see out at that time of day are pretty good with the social distancing. Not all, though!
It is very beautiful being out early, that’s for sure.
Other than that, I am actually getting more exercise than I usually would. I am doing an online class 6 days a week in the basement. Not getting much of anything else done, but I am definitely feeling results, especially with adding extra core work. I am very lucky to have a Concept 2 rowing machine that my spouse bought years ago. It’s getting a lot of use now!
I run and walk at the local trail… and either way I am often the first person making an effort to keep distance. It does seem reasonable though that walkers expect runners and bikers to be the ones making the biggest effort - they are agile/faster and probably spewing germs further. Honestly I’m still on the fence about taking a run today, even though it is 70 degrees.
I will always say - especially at we get older - that there if you walk and only walk (at a nice pace and a fair mileage) that that is excellent, sustainable exercise. It is good in so many ways!
Walk, jog, run, sprint - whatever, it’s good!
I also love my early morning before it’s really light time outside. If I’m walking I don’t even bother with headphones - just enjoy the morning sounds.
My running now involves zig-zagging down the road avoiding walkers and folks taking their dog for walk. I’m doing my best to give everyone a wide berth and I also run at odd times, say like, when it’s the hottest at 2 or 3 in the afternoon. But there are some people who are completely oblivious. Dog walkers in the bike lane for example, which is my passing lane when other dog walkers have these 15-foot leashes extended and there’s no room to run except in car traffic.
Today, I warmed up with a 1,000m row. In terms of lifting, I came to a 5-rep max back squat and then a 3-rep max deadlift. Then the HIIT was a classic CF workout of lighter weight deadlifts, hang cleans and presses, which took 12 minutes to complete. Without checking I think that’s a “modern” record for me. And I finished up with 3 sets of 10 glute ham raises.
Weightlifting today. Ooofff… Those mature western sword ferns are a beast to transplant!! Also got and planted a giant witch hazel. The biggest we could find… the darn thing weighed at least 200 pounds… ooofff…
It took a lot of willpower to get out the door this morning. Today was supposed to be a rest day. But the wicked storms are supposed to hit tomorrow morning, so I swapped days.
It was really hard getting up at oh dark thirty. Once I stumbled outside and got moving, I was proud of myself for doing anything that I didn’t care how slow I was going. I was running and time went by quickly. Go me. And being Easter and the other mess, I think I saw 5 cars in 70 minutes. And I was on the main roads because I dreamt that someone tried to abduct/kill me on my run this morning. I can say lol now I guess. It seemed real in the middle of the night.
Then the video was phase 3, week 4 AAA. I did well with that. And also day 7/22 of the ab challenge.
And I am very much looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow and listening to the storm.
