Our storms were already here this morning, and I wanted the treadmill surface anyway, so downstairs it was for me! 3.5 miles of slow running- but it was all running. I thought I would walk some to give the knee a break, but it held up well. It’s a really nasty day here- we did get the dogs walked in the only 20 minute break in the reain. I REALLY want some Easter candy, so my husband is off with his mask to see if Walgreen’s is open to get us some. I had to run early enough to make Easter church, which meant I had to be upstairs and out of my sweaty shirt and into a sweatshirt to sit in front of the computer at 9:30! No travel time today.
I’ve started a plank challenge that my Pilates studio has posted online. I’m cruising because the plan so far has been working up to 1 minute, which I can already do. Next week, we start going beyond a minute. The studio posted, the longest time holding a plank is 8 hours!! The record holder is an ex-Marine in his 60s. I didn’t bother to fact check.
Also, this morning, I did a 90 minute onlinel vinyasa class with my regular yoga studio. It was a great class–some of us who had gone on a yoga retreat to Costa Rica in January stayed on Zoom for coffee after class.
I did about an hour and a half bike ride with my husband today. We are really tired of the streets in our neighborhood, but better than nothing.
Also cleaned many windows today. I’m counting that as arm work.
We’re thinking about a bike ride. I went for a long walk this morning but the boys have been cooped up all day. Unfortunately, it’s about 90 here, so everybody feels a little lethargic. Oldest son is happily holed up doing work for his college courses but youngest got bored and is actually dozing on the couch.
I’m going to let him sleep another 45 minutes or so and then see if he wants to go bike in this area near our house that has a lot of Sandhill cranes. This is about the time of year we usually start seeing Sandhill crane babies, so it might be fun to look for them on bikes. The Sandhill babies are so cute when they’re young - like brown fuzzballs on stilts.
Or maybe if he’s still asleep I’ll let him sleep longer and we can go out walking after dark and look for owls and bats. Not sure. But hopefully we’ll get out and do something. Between the chocolate in our Easter baskets and the waffles this morning, we may all be in a sugar coma.
Ended up biking for an hour. Didn’t see any crane babies (or adults, which is unusual, maybe they’re already settling in for the night by this time.) Nice, but windy.
Many people and families were out walking and biking. And it was nice to bike by and hear families sitting on their porch or patio talking and enjoying the evening.
It’s a rare day that I don’t do any type of physical activity, but that was my day today. In addition, I broke a few of my eating rules - had the third glass of wine this weekend (supposed to be sticking with two), ate some chocolate (have been avoiding sweets since the first of the year), ate a lot.
In some ways it was good for me to take a day off- but I really didn’t enjoy it that much. Back to my healthier ways tomorrow.
Paging folks who would like to help @Curiousreader pick a rower!
I have a Concept 2. Not because I’m an Olympic rower or need something that industrial, but because that’s what all my rowing friends recommended and because I figure if I didn’t like it I could easily resell it for almost what I paid for it because they’re the standard that are used for all the athletes and most clubs, etc. When I was looking to buy a rower, around here the used Concept 2s seemed to resell for just a little bit less than the new ones.
Again, I’m just a recreational user, but I use it 2-3 times a week and like it. It’s very adjustable, easy to clean and easy to move around. The mechanism is smooth and it’s easy to see why the pro athletes train on them.
Sorry, I must have missed the post asking for a rower recommendation. Every CrossFit gym, every YMCA and pretty much every other gym that I’ve worked out in has always had a Concept2 rower. I’m sure there are others out there, but I’ve never seen one. ![]()
I have my gym’s C2 on loan at my home. They separate in two halves, to stick in your car, with a easy pull of a lever and they sit upright for easy storage as is. They move easily and they’re light. And there’s an active resale market for them. Rowers use them for their winter work.
As a CrossFitter, the C2 is a staple of our workouts every week. We also use the air assault bike, bike ERG (made by C2) and the Skierg (made by C2). I’m actually been hunting for a used Skierg, but the used gym equipment market is upside down right now. Literally. Sellers of used gym equipment right now are charging 2x or 3x the original new price.
There are two current C2 rower models. The Model D and E. They’re exactly the same, but for the seat height. The Model E is a bit taller for those that may have a hard time plopping their bottom on the lower Model D. I prefer the Model D with the slightly lower seat height, because sometimes the CF programming has me/us do burpees and then jump OVER the rower. And repeat. ![]()
My bones are/were VERY sore from the squat and deadlift session (and HIIT) from yesterday, so I went “light” and ran a 5K and 30 weighted GHD sit-ups.
Thank goodness no chalk messages. :grimace:
We had more than 6 inches of snow today (it stayed on the lawn but melted on the streets). It made me glad I got out for a walk when it was 70 degrees yesterday.
I have not done much running in past month, and only a few walks per week. But I have made an effort for healthy eating / food logging. In that past, when I gave up on exercise the good eating habits declined too. So it’s not as bad as it could be.
I have a water rower, what I really like is that it is beautiful to me. It is set up in my master, not in the gym. It is also really easy just to stand up if you don't want it out all the time and has a tiny footprint that way. It has a very basic computer on it for erg metrics, so you need your own HRM, so it isn't sophisticated tech (I yearn for something that allows a little more sufferfest/swift type options). The difficulty is that it is really boring so you need to set it up with some distracting entertainment and you want to perfect the fan position. I have the huge telly and headphones set up.
I like that if I needed it in my living space, I would be happy for it to be there. We won’t always have a dedicated room for a gym.
No doubt, if aesthetics are any consideration, get yourself a water rower because they are pretty and the Concept2 is about as attractive as a leaf blower.
Good point about rowing being super boring (just like any other in-place exerciser like the treadmill or stationary bike). If you get the computer with the Concept2, there are some fun games on there. I like to play the one where you’re a medium sized fish and you have to row/“swim” faster to avoid sharks or dodge to catch and eat little fish.
Why yes, I do have a short attention span.
This part of the country celebrates Easter Monday instead of Good Friday, so a holiday it is for me. I made the right call switching days. I slept in, but was woken up at 5:45 by the emergency alert phone call – tornado warning. That’s when I would have been finishing up my run. I listened to the raging storm and fell back asleep. H got me up around 7:30am. He looked outside and saw a car blocking our driveway. (not uncommon and a royal PITA) Goes stomping out and sees the car had been BADLY damaged. As in, the whole front right side was twisted and smashed. The wheel was bent 90% the wrong way and resting on its axle. It hit a car that is always parked on the other side of our driveway. It flattened 3 of its wheels and then some, pushed it up onto the curb and knocked down a sign. It’s totaled. But, the car stopped just inches from younger S’ car. It’s perfectly fine. We got so lucky!!! We called the cops and they took care of it. The parked car’s owner said she heard a loud noise and voices. She thought they were coming up our driveway – between 4:30am and 5. That’s exactly the time I would have been leaving to go run. Phew! I suspect the guilty part was on drugs or drunks or both. Our street is supposed to be 25 mph.
The storm is mostly over. Just some crazy wind. I went out to the C-gym to do 30 min of yoga. “Calm within the storm” was my mantra of the day. At some point a transformer blew nearby. It didn’t affect us this time. It was a good session that focuses on balance. And then day 8/22 of the ab challenge. This week I am stepping it up adding a set to each exercise. Crossing my fingers our luck holds out for the rest of the day.
Wow- that’s a little too much excitement for the night/early morning. Wonder what the story is on the car?
5K on the treadmill this morning before an 8:30 video conference. It was gloomy and windy outside and the treadmill seems a little easier on my knee. Got it done. Maybe a little more later…
Yeah, I wasn’t sure if the car damage was a result of the storm/tornado or losers out driving in the midst of one! Just awful! Sounds like some crazy storms overnight and today.
I too got out early for an “abasket 5K” leaving the house prior to light but not too dark. With my lighted vest. I knew the temp for the day was at it’s best then. And I was right - temps have dropped from 53 at run time to low 40’s now and it is WINDY with a capitol W!!! Day one of the Lululemon Strava challenge complete - thanks @deb922 for posting about it! It’s just a good distraction!
I’m in awe of those of you who get up and exercise at the crack of dawn. I like to have my coffee in bed!
Last week I was feeling melancholy and just not myself. I could not bring myself to do much in the way of exercising. I’m committed to not fall into a couch potato mode. I’ve worked to hard getting into better health and I don’t want to just let it slip away. Not yet sure what I’ll do today but it will be something! It’s a beautiful day and at least some form of exercise outside is in order.
Just did some weights and about an hour on my indoor bike. Weather here is yucky today, and I checked a little while ago and I gather there was a tornado watch in our area. This is the longest stretch of exercising almost every day I’ve done in many years, even though compared to many of you I’m a light weight.
It was cold, snowy and windy. Got out to the trails for a shorter than usual walk but got it done.
Re: the lululemon challenge. It’s super easy, just try and get some sort of exercise/movement 5 days a week for 4 weeks. That’s all, just a commitment to do something, move somehow 5 days a week.
You don’t even have to sign up for strava if you don’t want. Just come here and tell us what you did today, hardcore or not. I’m mostly not hardcore but I am challenged to try and move everyday.
Accountability helps!
I have a short attention span also, but as an example, today’s WOD (Workout Of the Day) for me is the following:
xx Pull-ups
xx Push-ups
xx Sit-ups
xx Air Squats
500m row
It’s a 30-minute workout, doing a round every 10 minutes, planning about a 1-minute rest between rounds. If you cannot do a pull-up, then just Google one of the many “pull-up substitutions.” And scale the volume appropriately, where you can finish 3 rounds of each movement.
This way, you’re too buy to be bored on the rower.
When you say “If you get the computer with the Concept 2…”, do you mean the PM5 monitor or something else? Because the PM5 monitor comes with the rower.
It may have changed, but when I bought mine a few years ago the display - that shows your time, distance, etc - used to be an option. You could buy just the bare bones rower with no display/computer.
