Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Congrats to him @ClassicMom98 - it’s a big and important milestone no matter what!

Day 12 or 13 since getting sick and two weeks off any training.

Back at it today, somewhat reluctantly. So easy for inertia to set in when you’re not feeling 100%!

Deloaded “intensity” deadlifts 195# for 2 sets of 3

Deloaded “volume” squats for 125# for 5 sets of 5

Felt better than I had expected! I think the deloaded weights were just right. It felt like some effort but nothing was even close to grind-y.

I noticed I got hot. Which is weird bc the basement is unheated and it’s in the low 40s outside. I took off my knit cap and sweatshirt and changed into a tank — super weird in these winter like conditions.

I also noticed how winded I got with each set. Lungs are not at 100% yet.

I’ve got a chicken breast in the oven and plan to have that over farro with guacamole salsa. My appetite is coming back!

Upper body next Tuesday…

SO happy to have you back and recovering @Midwest67 . Do pace yourself wisely!

Thanks @abasket

I’m in no hurry to get back up to my previous working sets. Even slow is fast!

But I feel well enough to start up again & prevent further detraining.

Good for my mental health too. It’s yucky feeling ill and tired and weak.

It was overcast here so my younger son and I took advantage of the cooler temps and did a long bike ride, stopping at a few favorite places… the farm stand, the French bakery (croissants) and the local hole in the wall Asian market (spices and rice.) He’s been a little irritable and I think getting out and about was good for him. The timing worked out well since about half an hour after we got home the clouds cleared and the temperature increased 15 degrees (75 when we were out, almost 90 now.)

So glad you are on the upswing @Midwest67 ! Slow and steady.

Yay @Midwest67 !!!

Glad you are back feeling better @Midwest67 .

Sometimes things just don’t work. Woke up early for my long run day. Although I like to do that on Saturday and have a lazy Sunday, it was storming here yesterday morning. So Sunday early it was. But nothing really worked. Didn’t feel like I could breathe, couldn’t get into it and then by the end of mile 1 it started pouring. Not raining or drizzling, pouring. I actually like to run in the rain when it’s hot here, but this was so much rain I couldn’t see more than a few feet and it was just miserable. My socks started to rub and slide around in the shoe and that was the final straw… all signs pointed to me being done for the day.

So only 3.8 of the planned 8 miles. No worries, I’ll try again next weekend. Not every day goes as planned but I at least got out there and am not worried, will be back on track soon.

Some days are like that, @milee30 unfortunately. There are more runs to come!

I also didn’t get to do my longer run yesterday and today wasn’t raining but was very gloomy. I drove over to the path and made myself do a low heart rate run and was mainly compliant. It required a lot of walking breaks to keep my HR where I wanted it to be. I would run it up, then walk. 6.5 miles done. Liked my new New Balance 1080 v. 10 shoes. I have not been a NB wearer, but I like the Fresh Foam cushioning system they are using now. Besides- the shoes are a great yellow color! That’s what matters, right?

@milee30 that sounds miserable. Really, great effort considering everything! As said above, more runs to come!

I thought I posted here, I guess I didn’t.

3 miles walk/run at the trails. Didn’t feel great.

9 holes of golf, walking. I wasn’t as terrible as I thought I might me.

Heel hurts, ugh

Did the Kettlebell work out followed by most of the HASfit 30 minute whole body workout. And listened to a Splendid Table podcast.

Unfortunately Saturday got away from me, so all I had time for was 10 mins on the assault bike, 10 mins on the rower and a 1 mile run.

Today, I went to the hilly park with the outdoor pull-up bar and in about 30 minutes did 10 sets of muscleups and squats, using a weighted vest and “wreck bag” (a fancy heavy sandbag) for my squats.

I then traveled over to the local track where I did 4 rounds of: 400m run with “wreck bag” (on my back), 400m run (with no weight) and a set of cleans with the “wreck bag.” I finished just under the 30-min timecap.

The final untimed exercise was about a 100-yard (full soccer field) “lunge-fest” with the wreck bag on my back. Two police vehicles passed by, but didn’t stop.

The police probably didn’t want to mess with YOU with the wreck bag on your back!

It’s been fun to read what people are doing. I am definitely on the “light” side of this; I have crepitus in the knees and when I was going to the gym regularly and using an elliptical, I got stress fractures in my feet. So what I have been doing for the last year or so when I can’t walk or hike are the good old-fashioned Jane Fonda videos from the late 80s and early 90s, plus YouTube videos (Bodyfit by Amy, Kathy Smith, Jenny Ford, and Simone de la Rue). I really love dancy aerobics because I am a child of the 80s. I also get a sense of satisfaction from learning the steps. I just modify things for low impact.

Since the gyms are closed anyways, I use dumbbells we have at home for resistance as well as the dancy stuff. I try to do 30 minutes of exercise a day, whereas before the lockdown, I would do about 75 min. 3x a week. My focus is retaining functional mobility so that I can hike, etc. and still enjoy myself. I could stand to lose a few pounds but my main goal is just to stay active as I get older. I’ve seen older people I love just sink into decrepitude, and I don’t want to do that.

Miles and miles walked on the trail this weekend! Followed by functional fitness aka weeding.

I rode my bike for over an hour yesterday, and pulled weeds for well over an hour too. (When I read BBs post I remembered why I was sore in places I’m normally not).
Today was a yucky rainy day, and I did nothing but a few chores that could count for exercise. I am a lightweight, but I have been getting at least an hour of cardio 6-7 days a week, and doing yoga and weights many days too.

Walked about 5 miles earlier, and that will likely be about it for exercise for me today.

It was chilly this morning- but sunny- so I forced myself outside and did 4 miles. Maybe more later on the treadmill. It was a pretty morning, really, but I didn’t do very well- heart rate was too high and my legs were tired. Glad I did it, though.
