Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Bench (my least favorite lift!) was HEAVY yesterday.

My working set was 10# under my PR! 93#
So hard.

Press was for volume (5 x 5) & 58# was strong & smooth. Felt great.

I was able to knock out 3 sets of 2 on chins, which was a relief that I wasn’t set back to a single rep.

I crank the music when I lift, and I’ve been struggling with concentration since the pandemic.

The training sessions take too long as I dilly dally on the warm-up sets or take long-ish breaks before switching to a different lift.

The working sets are not a problem bc I use a timer.

Yesterday, instead of music, I put on a podcast. I was thinking no way will I be able to lift and listen to a podcast.

I was very very surprised that not only could I listen to a podcast, but I moved thru the warm up sets without distractions. In fact, overall, my mind was caught up on listening to the podcast words with little opportunity to get distracted & ruminating.

The mind is so weird.

This morning I did that long run that got cut short last Saturday. Not the easiest, but not horrific, was OK. But dang, I’m missing some places being open so I can pop in and use the bathroom.

Best news of the day is seeing @Midwest67 getting back to normal! What a relief! I’m sure moreso for you. Even better than us getting power back just now. Turns out it was a planned repair that the (city owned) utility company didn’t feel the need to let the customers know ahead of time. It was supposed to take an hour. It took 4. Awesome customer service!

I had a good morning. I’m loving my new workout. It’s weird that even the cast can’t do it all without stopping. The girls usually fare the best. But even they do modified stuff. Today’s 3 rounds of 12 eccentric pull-ups followed by 15 eccentric hanging knee-ups with 30 sec of rest in between rounds? Uh… Not happening. My forearms were toast after the first round. It’s fun to try it all. And no, I can’t do 12 eccentric pull-ups! After a few, I use a chair for some, rest, a few real and repeat.

And my run was weird. I was again achy and sore. Ran to the gym and did my 5K loop. I was only hoping for 24s. I wound up doing it in 21:50. Woah. But let’s say my run home was MUCH slower. A slug sped past me going up the hill.

Went over to the path and ran 7.3 with walking breaks starting at 3 miles to try to keep my heart rate down- which didn’t work that well. Glad to get the distance. It was a gorgeous day. 60-69 degrees while I was out there and blue skies. There were groups of runners and walkers (this is not a crowded path) but not huge groups. 2s and 3s The tennis courts and some bathrooms were open. Water fountains are working. Things almost seemed normal, but no kids’ soccer games going on.

@ClassicMom98

Thanks!

@MomofWildChild

You didn’t mention your knee! It handled the +7 miles without complaint?

Ran 6.5 this morning…it was absolutely beautiful outside. This is a very hilly route, but that pretty much describes my neighborhood!

@Midwest67 I’m glad you are doing so much better!
Yes, thanks. My knee has been doing really well and I think I can probably shed the sleeve. It’s more psychological support…

@ClassicMom98 , do any of your kids run? You could probably past the fastest of them with that speedy of a run! That’s a 7 minute mile! How do you do it??? Seriously? That’s a sprint.

You should enter the senior games (if they ever have them again) with those kind of times! We can all cheer for you!

Carried sticks and logs around the yard, it’s more work than it seems.

3.5 miles at the trail. 20,000 steps for the day. It was a gorgeous day.

Rode bikes for over 30 miles with husband today. Had to drive to get there, and the path was pretty crowded. We haven’t been near this many people since all this started. We wore face masks for much of the ride.
It’s great weather here today, so not surprised to see people out, but we have NEVER seen nearly this many people on the path we rode on.

Sticks and logs are nature’s dumbbells!

Waiting for a break in the weather to unload our dirt we hauled from the topsoils place. Or should I say “mud”? ?

Absolutely!

Lol thanks. But I am blessed with the ability to run pretty fast for a long period of time. But I don’t have any extra gears. I’m certain I couldn’t break 20 now in a race. Even in the day with consistent speedwork, I was a solid 19 min 5Ker with a PR of 18:30. And I’m only 47 so it’s better than average, but nothing national class. But I appreciate it!

And neither kid is a big runner. Older S did XC but our team was awful. We rarely had 7 boys or girls and at the meets I could beat almost all of the boys from all the local schools. He runs 3-5 miles for general fitness when. He’s in the mood. Younger S hates solo running but loves soccer. He ran enough to be able to play. If either kid worked at it at all, I’m sure they could beat me in a 5K. They could beat me in a Sprint when they were 8!

Yeah, that 7 minute mile is a little better than average - at any age! You’d run circles around me!

Glorious spring day. I moved from the moment I got up. 28K steps between 2 purposeful walks, grass cutting and hours and hours of yard work. Hoping to rinse and repeat tomorrow.

I had a great day, walked 7 mi and rode my bike for 30 mi in the lovely 75 deg weather! I started a new job - amazingly hired in the middle of the pandemic and the day before our university implemented a hiring freeze - and since we are working at home I am averaging 1200 cal/day of exercise. I’ve lost almost 10 lbs since the quarantine started. Just 5 lbs more to get back to my weight in college!

Informal poll - what does everybody carry (if anything?) when they run/walk/bike?

I used to carry nothing, but over time I’ve started carrying two essentials: tiny tube of aquaphor and 2 tissues. The aquaphor can be used as lip balm or rubbed on any area that’s starting to chafe and the tissues are in case all the bathrooms are closed and an outdoors pit stop has to happen. Weird, but works for me. And I only carry that stuff if I’m going to be out/gone more than 3 miles running or an hour on the bike.

What does everybody else carry?

When I ride I carry everything I need to change 2 flats, do some minor first aid, toilet paper (no trail or park toilets though, so this would have to be some emergency). I have some antihistamines, ibuprofen, some bum cream, my special nose clip readers for magnification (sexy) money, ID, a snack, sunscreen. My bike seat pack has all the basics for tube change and minor tire repair. I carry a pump and CO2. I hate seeing women riding bikes but unable to fix a flat. 2 bottles of water and some drink mix if it is really hot. It is flat where I am, added weight is only to my calorie burn assistance.

I carry a tissue running (same reason as above). Longer than 8 miles at least one gel nutrition packet (Humagel). iPod for music. If I’m somewhere without any water, I carry a handheld bottle which I hate to do. Most of my current shorts and tights have deep side pockets for stuff.

For walking the dog, phone, earbuds, sometimes bear spray (loose dogs).

For hiking, full day pack with water, snacks, first aid kit, extra clothes, phone, earbuds, paper map. Also sometimes bear spray.

Always a bandana for my runny nose. If it’s not the cold weather, it’s allergies.
