Fitting in

I'm an international student and I will most likely be attending my top choice school.

I've found out that it may be dominated by rich, preppy kids. Where I'm from, I have never experienced being around many rich, preppy kids. Even the rich people here aren't all that ostentatious.

I'm kind of scared that I won't 'fit in'. I know that I shouldn't care about what people think of me, but please offer some comments that will give me some hope and boost my confidence please.

Thanks...

Well, for starters, you’re going to be an international student. That automatically ups your coolness factor. Rich, preppy kids can be snobby or down-to-earth just like not-rich, not-preppy kids. Remember that at college you are on an equal level with them. You got in. They got in. That makes you equals. (I feel the need to quote Pride and Prejudice at this point.)

College is a diverse environment. There’s no norm to “fit into”, really. If you don’t feel you belong with the rich, preppy kids, I can assure you there will be other peers that you feel more comfortable with.

International students have a definite cool factor. You’ll fit in wherever you fit in, and there’s no use in complaining about loaded and ostentatious kids since there will be plenty of middle class and unostentatious students wherever you’re going. Where are you from?

Yes, international student makes you super cool :D

Colleges can have a ton of rich kids, but there are many kids from middle class families too.

It’s not like high school where the rich is popular. There are too many kids in college for cliques, and hopefully they’ve matured from that mentality.

Good luck!

To be honest, I’ve found that students who aren’t rich and preppy can be just as, if not more, ******-y than anyone else. I’ve also met some kids that are filthy rich and the nicest kids you’ll ever meet. So just don’t go in with the idea that you think ALL rich and preppy kids are snobby. If that’s your mindset, then you will think they’re that way, whether they actually are or not.

College is a really diverse enivronment indeed- depends on where you go though. But for the most party you’ll fit in and make loads of new friends that aren’t snobby.

Thanks guys!

I definitely feel better :)
