Flaws of Democracy

For a history assignment, I need to find places where democracy has failed (i.e. led to society falling apart). They need to be pre-Constitution, too. Any ideas?

Greatly appreciated.

lol... what a liberal assignemnt.

a flaw could be that you can't build up a military-industrial complex fast.

think about it, germany under hitler was a hyper power and first world and very safe.

What about the Roman era... Most often past democracies have failed from corruption right?

Everything happens so SSSSLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWW. To get anything done it has to go through the House and Senate and then the President and then it can be recalled and by the time it actually works, the reason why we needed it in the first place either a) is gone or b) has escalated. It's a good system to make sure no one over-powers anyone else but it takes forever to get anything done.

*pre-constitution lily ;)

oops sorry about that :)

I wonder if the OP meant in addition to modern flaws... in which case... you'd be right.

Main flaw of democracy: that 90% of people have an IQ below 120.

Plato, yo.

I agree... and we can never escape it. Why? The smart people merely prey on the ehh... not-so-smart people, and the not-so-smart people depend on the brains of others for survival.

and the smart people depend on the work force of the not-so-smart-people. There is no society/government where everyone is COMPLETELY equal.

Which brings us to the debate of knowledge vs. ignorant bliss.

Sweetheart, there IS no debate :P

Yes, it's funny how there are so few of us who can even see that there is a possibility for debate. (I.E. dumb people cant). With so many geniuses gone insane, it's tempting to be the happy average american, safe in your own little world

debating=fun
ignorant bliss=also nice at times
genius gone insane=fun to watch.

Seriously though there IS a happy medium between knowledge and ignorant bliss. Who says it has to be one or the other?

Well I find that ignorance is like sitting in the corner of a huge room. If I start move away from the corner even just the slightest bit, then I must explore the whole room. It's like I'm in the corner, or I'm not.

Don't worry - you'll never see even half the room :)

Knowledge is addictive; but more wisdom does not create more personal misery. It's a function of termperment more than anything else. And intelligent people tend to be more sane, not less.

I know that much of the room is left unexplored, but every detail I can view brings me closer to completeness.

I suppose your right though, much depends on the personality.

Some things you just don't want to learn-thus ignorance is bliss.
The OP must really like the way this thread side-tracked...

um, u can say that a lot of politicians are corrupt or something.

I think the OP ran away or something.
