I interviewed at UMich this weekend and I was curious as to if it is common practice to email each of your interviewers with a follow-up thank you. My roommate was writing them literally a couple hours post-interview, and I'm not sure if I should be as well. Thanks!

I did not do this except for the one or two professors I had been in touch with before each interview. It seems kind of weird to write “thank you” emails to random faculty, whereas keeping in touch with faculty you may actually work with makes more sense to me.

So I definitely wrote all the faculty who I had formal interviews with a quick thank you note, usually a day or two or so afterwards, not within hours though – a little room for reflection and digestion never hurts. It obviously makes the most sense if you’re interested in rotating/ working with them in the future, but in any case it can open up a line of communication. With one, we actually ran out of time during my interview, and after emailing a quick thank you, he asked if I would mind spending a few extra minutes talking about my application over the phone. I guess it can work to just re-affirm your interest as well and will never hurt in my opinion.
